D i s c o at the Club!

Our first signature event of the season was a huge success as members donned their best 70s outfits and danced the hustle, the Bump, and YMCA. Guests were welcomed as they entered the yacht club with ''Welcome Back" from the ever popular Welcome Back Kotter. The Disco Party, with music by DJ Steve Reynolds, was a departure from our usual dining parties since the focus was on dancing. There were four dining tables ladened with steak, shrimp, grilled bronzino and caramel apple cheesecakes to name a few items. The room was lit with strobe lights and the quintessential mirror ball hung from the ceiling. Special guest of the evening was John Revolta ( Jeff Comeaux) and the Revolta Dancers with their synchronized performance of ''Night Fever " by the Bee Gees. Then, of course, there was the dance-off for best dancer and best dressed. While John Travolta was projected on the screen, the members took his cue and donned 'attitude' for this signature event. A great time was had by all! Photos by Casey Ellis, Carol Comeaux and Linda Marr

Wine & Dine At MIYC

Wine & Dine at the MIYC has grown in popularity over the years. Chef Bob and his Staff have brought it to a new level. Members were greeted with a g l a s s o f c h amp a g n e a n d appetizers during Happy Hour, meeting and greeting old and new friends. Then, Erin, of Southern Wine & Spirits, opened with an overview of the upcoming wines. Diners referred to menus for each course. The variety, flavor and a r t i s t r y o f each d i s h wa s admirable. Watch for eblasts announcing next Wine & Dine. You do not want to miss!

Marco Patriots

October’s Boater’s Night featured MIYC Member Erin Milchman telling the story of the Marco Patriots, a group now well-known on the Island for their tireless work helping area residents before, during and after Hurrican Irma. Erin’s brothers, Matthew and Mark Melican, founded the group along with local resident Ron Hagerman; Erin and her partner, Joey Waves, have been active volunteers.

Members were touched by the stories of victims and what has been done to help them, in a true “neighbors helping neighbors” approach to community. The need is still great, as Goodland, Everglade City and Chockaloskee were especially hard hit, affecting many who do not have great means. Members who want to help the cause can go to the Patriots gofundme page, or get more information from the Patriot’s Facebook page. https://www.gofundme.com/886c9-marco-island-hurricane-irma-fund https://www.facebook.com/groups/872069569627102/

MIYC Book Club With a delicious Russian-themed lunch from Chef Bob— including a vodka sampling—Members literally got a taste of Moscow as they discussed A Gentlemen in Moscow at the October Book Club meeting. How do I join a Yacht Club if I donùt have much experience sailing or a boat? Neither of those things is an obstacle to joining a yacht club or sailing club. Most clubs are quite welcoming. A lot of clubs have some sort of annual open day. However, there’s a big difference between clubs in terms of membership fees, atmosphere, type of vessels, emphasis on racing or cruising, etc. Check out the clubs which are in your area. Have a look at their websites. Find out what waters they sail on, get an idea of the sorts of vessels in their marina. Compare fee structures with other clubs. Make contact. Explain you are thinking of joining, ask if it’s possible to make an appointment to be shown around. When you’re there, ask questions, e.g. ‘How

If you get a patronizing or unhelpful response, maybe look elsewhere. Once you’ve found a club which suits you, jump through whatever hoops necessary to join. They may require recommendations from one or more existing members. This article was posted on our MIYC Facebook Page.

There is a story that is usually told about extremely successful people, a story that focuses on intelligence and ambition. Gladwell argues that the true story of success is very different, and that if we want to understand how some people thrive, we should spend more time looking around them - at such things as their family, their birthplace, or even their birth date. And in revealing that hidden logic, Gladwell presents a fascinating and provocative blueprint for making the most of human potential.

The Dockside Lounge is Back!

We are excited to have the Dockside Lounge back for our use after our encounter with Hurricane Irma. We added new carpeting and restored marble floors that we did not even know we had. We cleaned and painted and refinished the wood and the furniture until Dockside was gleaming better than ever. We had our first member’s event on October 27 th and it was a huge success. Ours thanks to all the staff members involved in the restoration and to the outside vendors who changed their schedules around to help us get ready for season.

The Burgee Bar is almost back (and better than ever!)

Preparations for the new and improved Burgee Bar are well underway with a mid to late November opening. The main bar is in and the wine bar is built and ready to go. We have some final installations due on our new bar equipment. We are installing new lights and fans and working around some vexing Irma induced electrical problems. The new chairs and tables look great and are waiting for many hours of future happy hours. We have a few more finishing details to make this great new project truly the gathering spot of the Club.

The Ship’s Store is open!

Some areas of the Club had to serve as catch all areas as we worked to improve the areas around them. The Ship’s Store was one of those areas. We are happy to report that the Store is open and ready for business. Make sure that you stop by and check out all the old favorites and the new items that were added over the summer. More improvements behind the scenes have been made. The Committee would like to thank all the Staff and Club Members who reached out to help during this difficult time. It is that type of spirit that make us certain that the Club’s best days lie ahead of us. Thank you, Jim McKeown Interim Building & Grounds Chairman 847.812.8385 or jmckeown@mgscientific.com

Operations &HR

It is nice to see some of our Members returning to Marco Island. I am happy to announce that our Dockside Lounge was opened on October 26 th after repairing damages caused by Irma. We now have refurbished marble floors along the river side and a much needed new carpet. We have repaired and performed some touch-up staining on the chairs and have completed some painting. The p l an i s to cont i nue mak i ng some improvements over the next couple of months. Jim McKeown has been working diligently to complete the state-of-the-art Burgee Bar. All the chairs and table legs have been completely repaired and repainted thanks to our maintenance man, Zachary Box. The new cushions look outstanding and are a lot more comfortable. The entire area has been repainted and the Bar area is 95% complete with some new equipment that will make serving our Members much more efficient. We have also added a new wine bar for those extremely busy evenings to help expedite service. The Burgee flags Jim and Mary have set up add a beautiful touch to the atmosphere. The tile floor will be cleaned and buffed the first week in November and the remaining lights and fans will be installed over the next couple of weeks. Marco Canvas is scheduled to install the perimeter enclosures soon. We still have some work to do but hope to complete the remaining work and get our final inspection so we can enjoy our state-of- the-art Burgee Bar by the end of November. There is still a lot of work to perform in the courtyard area. The fountain has been repaired

and is functioning. The three brass fountain cranes that were injured by IRMA are going to the hospital the first of November for some serious repairs. The flag pole was broken in half by

Bob DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman

IRMA and we now have a new flag pole, thanks to Jim Marr. Jim, with some help, will work on getting the pole rigged and positioned so our monthly colors ceremony can resume in November. We hope to have the courtyard lights and landscaping completed by January so everyone can enjoy lunch and casual evening drinks in the newly refurbished courtyard. Irma also caused some roof, gutter and building damage that we are waiting like everyone else for qualified vendors to repair. October was a busy month for the MIYC staff, with only the Harbour Room open, they were still able to handle several banquets, one wedding, happy hour Friday’s and our first welcome-back member event. The Disco Party was a huge success, thanks to our new Membership Event Chairman Angela Holt and her Committee. You don’t want to miss any of the upcoming member events.

See you at the Club, Robert J DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman Past Commodore

The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs The FCYC meets every two months and yours truly and MIYC leadership were scheduled to attend the Bradenton Yacht Club September 8-10, 2017, FCYC meeting. Linda and I actually were going up on “Irish Miss” to enjoy a calm summer cruise. Well, as we all experienced, Hurricane Irma screwed that up and was not kind to Marco Island and to the locations of many other FCYC clubs. First, Irma was headed up the east coast, then the west, and finally, right up the middle affecting all of the Florida peninsula - hitting the Keys first, then Marco Island, Naples and continuing up to Georgia and points north. When it made landfall in the Keys, the Marathon Yacht Club did suffer some damage, and as it moved north, many other of our sister clubs sustained damage. We all will recover and, in fact, most of the 36 clubs have submitted status reports to keep us posted on their conditions. Please check the following for the latest updates: http://www.floridacouncilofyachtclubs.com/irma_update.htm Due to the impending storm, our FCYC Bradenton meeting was cancelled. The next FCYC meeting, scheduled for November 10-12, will be at the Fort Walton Yacht Club in the Panhandle. MIYC voting members are always encouraged to attend. Future meetings are scheduled at some very interesting clubs, so plan your 2018 cruising now. Chairman’s Report

Our Club is back in full swing! We have hosted a number of even t s t h r oughou t Oc t obe r. Planned maintenance items are nearly complete. The Burgee Bar upgrade is nearing completion, and we have nearly 70 people planning to attend the ‘Welcome Back Party’ on October 28! With the commencement of the

We have also made some changes to the operations in the Club. We have instituted new pricing levels for events such as weddings and other non-member programs. These events are now priced to assure we cover our costs before tips and tax. We have also added charges for room setup, and facility rental charges. For member exclusive events, we do expect to cover our direct operating costs (food, labor and linens) and are pricing accordingly while recognizing expected member discounts. Operations and HR Committee Chair Bob DeFeo has been working with the Club staff to implement these changes. We have also made changes to our Happy Hour bar offerings. We now have a 3-tier pricing structure during ‘Happy Hour’. The House/Premium/Super Premium categories reflect our cost of the various products in each category. House drinks are priced at the 50% Happy Hour discount level. The other categories are priced normally, but are eligible for the appropriate member discount. And, we are making sure we cover our cost of food, labor, table linens, etc. in our menu pricing. We will be working to have a range of menu prices that are competitive, especially when membership discounts are reflected. There are a number of other changes and improvements that have are planned for this coming year. We will continue to share with you the impact of the changes, and to the best of our ability, why the changes were made. Finally, I hope many of your will be able to participate in our November Member Meeting on 28 November. We will have a number of presentations to share progress and upcoming plans for 2018. See you then! Dave Everitt

Dave Everitt Chairman

‘Fall Season’, there are a few changes for this coming year I want to call to your attention. As a result of very collaborative conversations between representatives of the Boards of Directors for MIMA and the MIYC, we have agreed to a series of actions that should improve our mutual relationship. There are several parts to the agreement, but the part all of us will notice immediately is changes to the Parking Lot usage. Effective 1 November 2017, we have agreed to segregate parking areas for our respective Members. You will notice new signs that direct members to either MIMA parking areas or MIYC parking areas. The parking stalls facing the north side of the Marina are now reserved for MIMA members. MIMA has instituted a parking sticker identification to assure individuals parking there are owners or renters of MIMA slips. Parking stalls facing the Marco River are reserved for MIYC members and guests. Service providers for the two organizations, employees and parking overflow for both organizations will be in the east side of the lot and around the Dockmaster’s building. In addition, we now restrict circle in front of the Club to drop-off and pick-up only. We are revising our Valet service levels with this new arrangement, and will also make greater use of our golf cart to help reduce wait times. We expect it will take a month or two to have the system working smoothly. Your cooperation and patience is appreciated as we implement these changes.

Ahoy Members of the MIYC! A busy October has left us in her wake. The harvest is in and the frost is on the pumpkins (somewhere) and the changes around our Club are as exciting as the jam packed Members events schedule that approaches. The Burgee Bar upon completion will have a new “Wine Bar” for those who like to taste new wines and enjoy the view from the “other side of the Burgee”. The Marina side of the Burgee has been expanded and there is now plenty of room to socialize. The Dockside Dining Room looks stunning with our newly discovered marbled floor and charming new carpet. The new outside furniture has given the Club a fresh look that everyone can enjoy. As you may know our menu choices are changing on a more regular basis now with new entrees and appetizers receiving high praise. Our culinary team is inspired and ready for a great creative season.

Please make your reservations early ( and often) so that our team can provide the exceptional food and se r v i ce t ha t you deserve. As you know, my door is always open so if you have any spec i a l requests or questions (culinary wise or other) just give me a call here at the Clubhouse.

Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef

Don’t forget Saturday, November 18 th is “Johnny Cash Night” with my brother Mike and me belting out some old Johnny Cash favorites and a dinner written around some of the cuisine that Johnny Cash and June Carter enjoyed. I’m not sure why I agreed to do this, but it should be fun. Haha.

See you at the Club soon. Chef Bob

Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. More news … David Wolfe and Ocean Habitats was back on Marco on October 29. As you may know, the Club installed four habitats last year which are now flourishing with fish activity. I have seen good numbers of Jacks, Snapper, Sheepshead plus Tarpon and Hammerheads. Carol and I installed one in back of our home last year and have seen the same results with more fish activity. All good for Marco!! If you want a fish habitat installed at your home, contact David Wolfe at 218-841-5932 or david@oceanhabitatsinc.com . Ocean Habitats Inc. is a non profit environmental

Check Out Our Enhanced Website! We’ve been making improvements to our website—check it out! It now has more information and it’s easier to use! Drop down menus are one new feature that makes it easier to find the information you’re looking for. In “Member Central” (the password-protected side of the website for Members only) you can more quickly access the roster, pay your statement, check the calendar of events, see our Fleet List, join a committee and more! Log in and take a spin!

Also, take a look the new information we’ve put on the “public” side of the website. Under “About Us,” we have added a Club History, a map with directions, and photos of our Bridge Officers. Under the “Boating” tab, we have added information about our various types of cruises, the sailing program, information for visiting cruisers (under “Port Captain”) and safety and training information. And there will be even more to come! Stay tuned!

Safety and Training

Safe Boating Courses America’s Boating Course , the Power Squadron’s offering, encompasses five sessions over a two week period. The Auxiliary course, Boating Skills and Seamanship , is four weeks long. Both courses are comprehensive in their coverage of safe boating topics and certify students for the state of Florida. The reason for the difference is that the Power Squadron covers the essentials for certification and then offers further instruction regarding seamanship, navigation, etc. in other courses and seminars. The Auxiliary combines those aspects into

one course. The Power Squadron’s and the Auxiliary’s safe boating courses are advertised to the public as a public service and each are sanctioned by the same national organization. Look at the MIYC website for enrollment information and call or e-mail Jim Olmes to sign-up (239) 394-5415, jolmes1@aol.com . Additional Education Boaters, take advantage of all course offerings by the Auxiliary and Power Squadron. For a sketch of available classes this season, please look at the MIYC website Safety and Education page. In addition to the outside courses, MIYC will be offering some special seminars on topics for which members have shown interest such as: • Marlinspike • A Captain’s Responsibility • Rules of the Road • Aids to navigation • VHF/DSC radio. There will be much more to come on other topics and two new programs; Boaters’ Forums and on-the-water training. Vessel Inspections I encourage all boat owners to take advantage of the free vessel inspection programs available on Marco Island. These courtesy inspections are provided by the Power Squadron and the Auxiliary only and cover all US Coast Guard required safety equipment. Stickers are awarded for successful inspections. To schedule your inspection, contact Rudy Laandward of the Power Squadron (239) 389-4444 or John Moyer of the Auxiliary (239) 248-7078. MIYC Website In addition to the education schedules, of special interest to the boater are a number of new entries under the Safety and Training tab. They are:

• Float plan format • Navigation Rules • Rules of the Road • Vessel Safety Check requirements • NOAA charts • Mobil Maritime Service Identifier • Federal and state boating laws
