Donald S. Robertson, Ph.D. Chairman, Dept of Science, Biola Bible College

R ecently I had called to my atten tion a letter from a young stu dent in which the writer expressed concern because her biology teacher had referred to man as an animal. To many it seems degrading that man should even be compared to an ani mal let alone be called one. Yet in a strictly biological sense the teacher was correct. For structurally we are quite similar to the animals. This resemblance is not limited to anato my but has been shown to exist in the functioning of the various organs. Because of these similarities the bi ologist has every reason, from a pure ly anatomical and functional point of view, to classify us as animals and give us a scientific name, Homo sap iens. It is indeed fortunate for man that God created us thus. These basic similarities have enabled the scientist to learn much from the ani mals that helps us to better under stand ourselves. Our great progress in medicine and surgery has been made possible because there are these re semblances between man and the ani mal. But it must be remembered that the biologist in his laboratory is fre quently concerned only with the structure and function of our bodies. He has little to say about what makes us different from the animals. In fact the structural similarities are so impressive that some biologists have a tendency to think we are noth ing more than improved models of some of the higher primates.

The Bible while not denying a similarity between man and animals teaches us that man differs from them in a very fundamental way. What is the nature of this differ ence? Obviously it cannot be an anatomical difference or the biologist would have found it. The clue to this difference is found in the first chap ter of Genesis verse 26 where we find “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness . . .” This phrase our image obviously does not refer to any physical shape be cause God is an incorporeal spirit. If God is spirit and man was made in His image then man must also be spirit. It is the possession of a spirit then which differentiates him from the animals and not some physi cal difference. Since the spirit can not be seen the scientist has difficulty describing it and therefore misses the one thing that sets man apart from the animals. Thus we cannot argue with the biologist when he says we are ani mals because of structural similarity. But we must insist that man is infin itely more than the frame which the biologist observes and which we be lieve harbors the image of God. In reality, the Christian view is that the human body is not essentially man at all but rather the spirit which was created in God’s image represents the real man. However, our resurrec tion bodies will be “fashioned like unto his glorious body” when “we shall see him as he is.”
