Can a Thinking Man Believe in the Virgin B irth of Christ?

« ow seriously have you ever con sidered the Christian doctrine of the virgin birth? It is worth your earnest thought, for it will help you to evaluate your convictions concern ing Jesus Christ. Particularly today the subject presses upon us, for it is one of the most disputed and contro versial points in the statement of faith of the modem church. Long has the idea that Christ was bom of a virgin rather than as other men been ridiculed by the sceptics, laughed at by the schoolmen, and rejected by liberals and free-thinkers of every creed and fancy. In the present day the doctrine fares even worse, for it is being rejected within the chinch by men who still are pleased to call themselves by the name of Christian. A typical expres sion of the modem approach is that of The New Theology by Reginald Campbell, who says: “The simple and natural conclusion is that Jesus was the child of Joseph and Mary and had an uneventful childhood.” If you are a true believer in Christ, you will strongly resist such a state ment, but are you prepared to defend that which you do profess to believe? Not that the virgin birth of Christ can be fully understood or complete ly sustained by logic alone! Reason must often bow to Faith when it comes to the understanding of the Bible’s supematuralism. Nevertheless, the doctrine does have the support of much credible testimony, to such a degree that our opening question may be answered with an enthusi astic affirmative. A thinking man can believe in the virgin birth of Christ—that is, if he is properly qual ified to investigate the mysteries of God by having accepted Christ as his

own personal Saviour from sin (1 Cor. 2:14-16). Objections to the Virgin Birth Some do not actually deny the teaching of the Bible at this point, but rather they evade the issue, clas sifying it as unimportant. But is the doctrine not vital? Note the vigor of the enemy’s attack. Men do not stren uously oppose that which they con sider of no importance. The life of Christ must be considered as a whole, for denial of the virgin birth gener ally goes with a denial of the deity of the incarnation of the Son of God. Actually, what a man believes about the virgin birth becomes a test case of his orthodoxy, for it is merely a fragment of a much larger question: What is his attitude to all of the supernatural element in Christianity, and what is his conviction concerning that Book which claims without qual ification to be the inspired Word of God? How Big Is Your God? Some deny the virgin birth only as a part of their general denial of everything miraculous. To such, we question: How big is your God? If you have a god conceived after your own image, he will be just as limited as you are. If, however, you worship the only living and true God, the God of the Bible, you will recognize that He, as the Creator of the uni verse, is greater than the “laws of nature” which He has fashioned. Therefore it is not a question of the size of the miracle but the size of your God, for the One who holds the worlds in His hands is abundantly able for His own good purposes to set aside His more normal methods of procedure and produce what men call miracles. END.
