S U N D A Y S C H O O L continued chapter is referred to in this section. Both of these washings are mentioned in verse 10. The first is seen in the expression, He that is washed. This washing is in the nature of a bath. A different Greek word is employed froip the one used to speak of the second washing. This first washing refers to the cleansing which takes place at the commencement of the Christian life, “embracing complete absolution from sin as a guilty state . . . or, in the lan guage of theology, justification and regen eration” (Commentary by Jamieson, Faus- set, and Brown). This first washing is accomplished once and for all and is sym bolized by baptism. But the second wash ing which is the main theme of John 13 is not a washing of the whole body, as in the first instance, but only of “the feet.” This cleansing is such ,as one walk ing from a bath quite cleansed still needs, in consequence of his contact with the earth. It typifies the cleansing of the be liever’s daily walk. All believers have need of daily washing by the Word (Eph. 5:26). For this reason our Lord provided the symbolic action recorded in this pas sage and said, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (v. 17). The New Commandment vv. 34, 35 The new part of the commandment was the supreme example of loving which now belonged to the disciples and which they were to emulate as far as possible. Love was not a new thing but to love “as I have loved you” was something that had not been witnessed until our Lord came and poured out His heart for man’s redemption. They who love in any sense like He loved will reveal their identity as Christ’s followers. Obedience to Divine Commands 14:21-24 True love for God will issue in doing what God wants His child to do. Such obedience is appreciated by the Father and the Son and they will show that appre ciation by intimate fellowship with those manifesting it. When children are dis obedient to their parents there is not usu ally much enjoyable fellowship between them. So it is in the spiritual realm.
