S U N D A Y S C H O O L continued that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). The Holy Spirit has come to make His permanent abode in the life of every believer. He is able to give victory in every conflict. Note what is revealed concerning Him in these few verses. He is “the Comforter” (v. 7). In the Greek the word is Paraclete. It lit erally means “one called alongside to help.” This is who the Spirit of God is— the believer’s helper, or advocate. He is also the great Reprover (w . 8-11). This word carries with it the idea of conviction and convincing in addition to reproving. The verses before us' show that the Holy Spirit is in the world to do these three things with respect to sin, righteousness and judgment. And all this reproving, etc., is to he done in relation to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is clear that the Spirit’s ministry is to exalt Christ. He stresses the fact that the great question man must settle down here is not so much the sin question as the Son question. Note how the Son enters into the consideration of verses 9 through 11. Moreover, He is “the Spirit of truth” (v. 13). The believer will never know the truth of God except the Holy Spirit reveals it to him. He is the Author of the Word of God and the One who alone can illuminate its pages. Just before the Saviour died upon the cross He wanted to remind the disciples of the most important thing which He had tried to teach them. After the last passover supper, while Jesus and the dis ciples were walking toward the Garden of Gethsemane, God’s Son compared Him self and them to a vine and its branches. He reminded them that just as a vine must have its unfruitful branches cut away, so Christians have to be cleansed by God through His Word. He com manded them to bring forth good fruit in their lives by living close to Him, or abiding in Him. Two of the most precious things that the Lord Jesus said to His dis ciples during the walk were, “Love one another as I have loved you,” and, “Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command Jpou.” The Saviour reminded His frienas that those who were not Christians would hate them and even per secute them for their love for Him and for one another. The Lord Jesus knew that He must depend upon thdse who loved Him to tell others of His love for them and to show others how to live in love. He also knew that often it would be hard to obey His teaching and follow His ways and that many people would try to hinder them and misunderstand them. Only His wonderful love in their hearts could keep them true to His com mandments. END. Helps for the Children Living as Friends of Jesus John 15:1-19 Memory verse: "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you" (John 15:14). During the three years. that, the dis ciples lived and worked with the Lord Jesus, He had taught them many won derful truths about God and His plans for them and for the world.
