STEM Education Outreach
WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) SMART Challenge WYSE created the SMART Challenge competition after listening to teachers who wanted to do something to encourage their younger students (9th and 10th year) to persevere in math and science. The SMART (Science, Math, And Reading Tests) Challenge is a battery of tests that is truly “teacher friendly.”
WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering) Summer Camps Exploring Your Options is a week-long residential program that introduces high school rising juniors and seniors to the field of engineering. EYO is held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, allowing participants to interact with engineering students and faculty members, plan and build a project, and engage in hands-on activities prepared by departments within The Grainger College of Engineering. Discover Engineering is a one-week residential camp for rising sophomores who are interested in math and science. Students work on several projects that incorporate different aspects of engineering.
STEM outreach programs supports students from low income families or students who might be first generation college-goers. These programs foster accessible, effective, STEM teaching and learning at local, state, and national levels, thereby preparing a highly able citizenry and STEM workforce to tackle pressing global challenges. Companies can leverage I-STEM’s extensive network of STEM outreach projects and organizations to increase student interest in STEM careers, strengthen the STEM pipeline, and foster STEM workforce development.
The University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign is echoing its land-grant mission by establishing STEM Illinois with a coalition of local partners to engage with K-12 and college students in our surrounding communities. STEM Illinois will build an eco-system of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that inspires youth from diverse backgrounds and learning styles to explore STEM education and career opportunities. STEM Illinois will include a STEM Fest and nine STEM Saturdays, which are monthly hands-on STEM-based activities for children and their parents. Additional STEM Illinois components include a Communiversity Think and Do Tank, which will provide opportunities for community members to discuss challenges facing the STEM pipeline and possible solutions.
