American Sign Language & Deaf Culture Club The goal of the American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Club is to promote awareness and exposure of the language and culture of Deaf Americans to the University of Illinois community. Organizational members will have the opportunity to learn basic communicative skills in sign language and are encouraged to continue their involvement in the Deaf community and fluency in American Sign Language. Lastly, students have the opportunity to partake in outreach and engagement with the University of Illinois and Champaign-Urbana community. Alumni Mentoring Program The Alumni Mentoring Programmatches Beckwith alumni with residents who are planning on graduating or moving into other living environments. Current Beckwith supported residents are matched with an appropriate alum based on if the mentoring pertains to professional, independent living, disability specific or other miscellaneous areas such as utilizing a service animal.
Avicenna Community Health Center- Student Initiative Avicenna Community Health Center is a medical clinic in Champaign, IL that aims to assist the medical needs of the Urbana- Champaign community, particularly those who are uninsured and under-insured. Inspired by this mission and the desire to embody the spirit of community activism in Islam, Avicenna Community Health Center aims to be just that, a health center for the community. Its three main objectives are: To provide healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured, To engage in preventive healthcare through community health screenings, To promote health awareness through education and information dissemination. In order to fulfill these goals, Avicenna incorporates the help of the community at large by connecting with students and by providing volunteering opportunities and other ways of getting involved.
Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services The mission of the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services is to ensure that qualified individuals with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from the programs, services and activities of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through the identification and enactment of reasonable modifications to institutional policies and procedures, the provision of effective auxiliary aids and services, the establishment of innovative educational services, and the pursuit of interdisciplinary disability research. Disability Rights, Education, Activism and Mentoring Chapter DREAM is a campus chapter of the national DREAM organization which supports university students, faculty & staff with disabilities, and allies. The UIUC chapter provides a social community for disabled persons and allies to come together and be a bridge to other disability communities and resources in Champaign-Urbana. DREAM aims to: • Make space for disability community and dialogue on campus • Work with existing disability communities on campus to increase visibility and solidarity • Collaborate with other groups on campus to provide intersectional campus events
Beckwith Residential Support Services at Nugent Hall The Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES)/Beckwith Residential Support Services (BRSS) began a partnership with University Housing during fall semester 2010 with the opening of Timothy J. Nugent Hall. BRSS provides support for first floor residents of Nugent Hall with physical disabilities who require assistance in the performance of basic activities of daily living.
Best Buddies International Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
