o f the white man and the missionary has passed. And the Hunan Bible Institute stands as a school marvelously equipped in physical plant and spiritual staff to meet this need for m en ! It needs your prayers. Pray for the Bible Institute o f Los Angeles in China. From DR. TORREY’S "Christian Life Card” How to B egin the C hristian L ife God’s Command: “ Repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mk. 1:15). The Gospel: “ I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you . . . that Christ died for our sins accord ing to the Scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:1-4). God’s Assurance: “ By him all that believe are justified from all things” (Acts 13:39). “ He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3 :36). What It Is to Believe on the Son: “ As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). In obedience to God’s command, I do here and now turn from every known sin and believe the gospel that Christ died for my sins, was buried and rose again. I receive Jesus as my Redeemer, who bore my sins in His own body on the cross (2 Cor. 5:21 ; Gal. 3 :13 ; 1 Pet. 2 :24), and who has power to forgive my sins (Mk. 2 :10), as my Teacher to whom I will submit all my thoughts (John 6 :68), as my Guide to whom I will commit the direc tion o f my life (Acts 9 :6 ), as my risen Saviour whom I will trust to keep me from falling (Jude 24) and save me to the uttermost (Heb. 7 :2 5 ); and resting upon God’s assurance, I believe all my sins are forgiven and I have eternal life. H ints on T rue C hristian L iving I. All promptings of duty are leadings o f the Spirit. Follow them always and at any cost (Eph. 4 :30 ; 1 Thess. 5:19 ). -V’^Y'Never go where you cannot take Christ with you ,£MM d28 :20 ; Psa. 139:7 ). . >3? Never go where you would not be glad to have Christ find you if He should come; never do what you would not be glad to have Christ find you doing (Matt. 24:44-51; 1 Thess. 5:2, 4 ). 4. Do nothing that you are not confident that you can do to the glory o f God (Col. 3 :17 ; 1 Cor. 10:31). y5 . When in doubt as to any proposed act, do not do it, iff it is clear that loyalty to Christ does not positively de mand it (Rom . 14:22, 23; 1 John 3 :21). 6. Seek the blessing o f God upon all you do (Psa. 127 :1; Phil. 4:6, 7 ). 7. Do not try to discover how little Christ will accept o f you, but how much you can do for Him (2 Cor. 5 :14, 15; 1 Chron. 4 :10). 8. The best man is an unsafe example, so follow Jesus only (Jer. 17:5; Gal. 2:11-13; John 8 :12 ). 9. Seek at once and continually an enduement o f “ power from on high” (Lk. 24:49; Acts 2:38, 39; 4 :31 ). 10. Take all your doubts and troubles and burdens to Jesus and leave them with Him (Matt. 11:28; Psa 4 -22 - Isa. 50:10), II. Trust your salvation wholly to God (Eph. 2 :8 ; 1 Pet. 1 : 5; Jude 24).

The “ father of all Bible Institutes” he was in deed and in truth, and the students whose great privilege it was to sit under him will never forget him. He formed, molded, formulated, gave stamp and character to all Bible Insti tute instruction and training that has followed him. We sing, “ God bless the school that D. L. Moody founded,” and every word of that sentence is true, for Mr. Moody conceived the idea o f such a school, and raised the funds for it. But it was Torrey who put his stamp upon it, and made it what it became. The memory of Dr. Torrey will always be fragrant. knew how to weld all sorts o f people into active and effec tive cooperation, and how to utilize all kinds of situations to practical advantage.'' So far as I ever knew, Dr. Torrey had no intimates. Men o f his character are necessarily isolated. They stand apart with God and service. And yet, he was very much “ a man among men,” always genial and approachable. It is a great privilege to have known such a man as a friend. DR. TORREY, CHINA, AND THE HUNAN BIBLE INSTITUTE [Continued from page 11] Chinese men, ‘What is the greatest need o f China today?’ From the audience the cry went up in reply, ‘ Patriotism.’ W e shall see shortly that this is not the greatest need of China, but something that underlies real and reliable pa triotism— regeneration, through the only thing in this world that has regenerating power in it—the gospel o f Jesus Christ, which is ‘the power of God unto salvation’ (Rom . 1 :16 ), not only to individuals but to nations.. . . “ Now, let me speak o f China’s promise and China’s peril.. . . Wherein does the promise lie ? __China’s promise lies . . . in the great natural resources o f that land; . . . in certain national characteristics o f the Chinese people . . . their consistent frugality, . . . their capacity for learning, and their philosophic cheerfulness. . . . Again, there i&), much o f promise in the readiness o f the Chinese to listen t o .. and to receive the gospel.. . . “ What are China’s perils ? I might mention first, Japan, but I do not consider Japan one o f the greatest perils of China, but one o f the least. I am not defending Japan, God forbid . . . A far greater peril is China’s lack of men of}-' principle and power among the ruling classes . . . But-’5 China’s greatest peril is from a considerable and influen tial portion of the missionary body substituting the social gospel for the saving gospel o f Jesus Christ. . . . I can tell you China’s great need in a word— the gospel, the Simon- pure gospel; the gospel of a B ook ; the gospel o f a Christ., . . . The old gospel, preached in the old way, in the power o f the Holy Spirit, to all classes, especially to the poor, is China’s great need today.” Today as I read these words o f this master Bible teacher of mine, these conclusions o f a man who saw so clearly, my soul reverberates an “ amen and amen.” At this crucial moment when history is being made in Asia, China’s need is men, men who are strong and certain in their beliefs of the “ gospel, the Simon-pure gospel; the gospel o f a B ook ; the gospel o f a Christ.” That land needs men who will re main as leaders in the Christian church long after the day DR.
