so effortless, so natural, so pleasant, that, alas! alas! they seem to enjoy the sensa tion. It is only when the pace begins to accelerate terribly, it is only when control is slipping away, that this pleasant enjoy ment gives way to anxiety and alarm. —C harles I nwood . It behooves every Christian to check up on these points: Have I lost ground in the matter o f my fervency in prayer, or my honesty in speech, or my love for the Word of God? If failure must be ad mitted, comfort lies in the truth of 1 John 1 :9.—S elected . FEBRUARY 7 The Lordship of Chris.t "Thou, even thou, art Lord alone" (Neh. 9:6). There is a sense, o f course, in which Christ eternally is “Lord o f all,” but there is also a sense in which He becomes Lord in the experience of the soul by an act of surrender, followed by continued obedi ence. No man can call Jesus “ Lord” but by the Holy Spirit. In this sense, the Re deemer and Saviour o f every Christian is not necessarily his Lord. For an experi ence of Christ’s Lordship, an act and an attitude are required of the already saved soul. . . . And, let it be added, in and be yond this experience, Christ waits to be apprehended by faith as Intercessor, ever remembering and praying for u s; as Advo cate, for the adjustment of disordered relations; and as Friend, to the inner circle o f the obedient.—W . G raham S croggie . FEBRUARY 8 Reflecting the Glory of the Lord “ But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory o f the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit o f the Lord" (2 Cor. 3:18). We have this great ministry—that of. receiving and reflecting Christ’s glory. That is what Paul said. After telling o f the “glory” o f revealing Christ to a hun gering world, he immediately added: “ See ing we have this ministry, as we have re ceived mercy, we faint not” (2 Cor. 4:1). This is our ministry. May we ever reflect the glory of the Lord. Then life will be come one great adventure. We shall ever recollect, “ I must show something of the

I am to reflect the glory o f the Lord, and to be changed into the same image from glory to glory.” “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory o f God" (1 Cor. 10:31).—A. E. R ichardson . FEBRUARY 9 Like Bartimaeus “Be o f good comfort, rise; he calleth thee" (Mk. 10:49). I have been blind, like Bartimaeus, and to me also have been fulfilled the words o f the multitude. But the enjoyment of the fulfillment has been in the reverse order to the statement of facts recorded here. In the darkness o f sin, I heard the Saviour’s voice. “He calleth thee.” Though I was helpless and a beggar, Christ called for me— for me —as though there were no other. It was plain what my part must b e : “ Rise.” The requirement is ever easy to understand, difficult to meet. Too long had I preferred the ease of begging to the activity of rising. I could not rise at all in human strength, but grace assisted me. Hearing and rising and coming, I received the sweet message: “ Be of good comfort.” And though I was blind, now I see! —S elected . FEBRUARY 10 The Place of Rest “Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one o f his disciples, whom Jesus loved" (John 13:23). On Jesus’ bosom—nowhere else is found Balm for all wounds, and solace for all tears; Calm ’mid the clouds which gather thickly round, Peace from the pain which lingers through life’s years. Oh Jesus’ bosom! Truly welcomed there! Warmed by His love—His tender, sweet embrace: Made strong, once more, life’s overweight to bear; Lightened again by radiance from His face. On Jesus’ bosom! This my refuge be Till shadowed days for evermore be past; Till, in the home Christ now prepares for me, I find my everlasting place at last. —J. D anson S mith .
