FEBRUARY 11 Suffering Makes Us Like Christ

“ And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ, if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together” (Rom. 8:17). It is ever to be remembered, as touching the earthly life of Christ, that He was a “man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isa. 53:3). If, therefore, we desire to live as He lived . . . we must share with Him His experience o f suffering . . . We desire to reign with Christ, but we have no wish to walk in that narrow and hard path which is the only one which leads to the throne. Paul understood God’s re quirements better than we do, and he said that we must “through much tribulation enter into the kingdom o f God” (Acts 14: 22) . . . In other words, it is an unalterable law of God: No cross, no crown. But bearing the cross, we shall wear the crown, And the reason is not far to seek: Bear ing the cross brings us into fellowship with Christ and makes us like Him. V — H enry W . F rost . FEBRUARY 12 What God Will Do “My strength is made perfect in weak ness" (2 Cor. 12:9). Let but devoted laborers be found, who will prove faithful to God, and there is no reason to fear that God will not prove faithful to them. He will set before them an open door, and will esteem them of more value than the sparrows and the lilies that He clothes and feeds. He will be with them in danger, in difficulty, in perplexity; and while they may be utter weakness, H e will work through them in power. They may cast their bread upon the waters, but His Word shall not return unto Him void.—J. H udson T aylor . “Walking”—this is a picture o f the nor mal, daily Christian life—“walking,” not tumbling and stumbling . . . God said to Abraham: “Walk before me, and be thou perfect.” God’s purpose for us is walking day by day in perfect fellowship with Him . . . God’s provision for our daily walk is that of the precious blood of the Lord Jesus, for by that precious blood we not only have been pardoned, but we are also cleansed . . . Though you and I may be as that impotent man, yet we can walk with Jesus day by day, and not only walk, but leap.—W . G rist . FEBRUARY 14 The Way to Blessing "And the word o f the Lord came unto me, saying, Son o f man, these men have ■set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock o f their iniquity before their face" (Ezek. 14:2,3). Is that fact true of any of us? If it is, God says: “ Should I be inquired o f at all by them?” Can God possibly deal with our prayers so long as there is that state in our hearts and affections, that evidence of disloyalty to Him? . . . God has to deal with us before He can deal with our re quests. Are we willing to let Him do that? This is o f vital importance. . . . If the Holy Ghost, in His goodness, has taken hold of this simple message and carried it to your FEBRUARY 13 The Daily Walk "And he leaping up stood, and walked,, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God” (Acts 3:8 ).

heart, because it is true, do let the Lord deal with you. You may be holding up a blessing that is going to be far wider in its influence than its effect upon your own individual life.—A. S t . J oh n T horpe . The dearest idol I have known, Whate’er that idol be, Help me to tear it from Thy throne, And worship only Thee. — S elected . FEBRUARY 15 The Gospel for the World “For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory o f: fo r necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” (1 Cor. 9:16). Next to our salvation must come the duty o f sending the gospel to all. W e be gin at the inner circle, but woe to us if we stop there. W oe be to us if we preach not the gospel to every creature. W e feel a peculiar call to this, and a peculiar ur gency enforcing this call from our very system. For but little time remaineth. The night is falling. The storm is beginning to burst. : . . We cannot heap up treasures for the last days. W e must give liberally as long as the time allows. — H oratius B onar . The difference between the Pharisee’s standard of comparison and the true stan dard of the Christian believer is that, in the case of the one, it encourages a false pride, whereas, in the case of the other, it stimulates a true humility. I f we think of other men, we may be in danger of enumerating our virtues after the method o f the Pharisee. But if we live humbly in the pure white light of the risen Saviour, we shall find constant occasion to bemoan our unworthiness and unlikeness to Him . . . There is no other way o f achieving a true humility, because only the perfect righteousness of Christ can disclose the im perfection of our own character. —Life o f Faith. FEBRUARY 17 The Believer’s Dwelling Place “ Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations" (Psa. 90:1). There is something inexpressibly sub lime in the thought that the immortal and omnipotent Lord is the dwelling place o f poor, finite, sinful humanity, and noth ing short of divine inspiraiton would have led Moses to put such a statement on rec ord . . . There are at least four ideas con nected with the thought of any true home FEBRUARY 16 Standards of Comparison “Every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted" (Lk. 18:14).
