—it must be a place of refuge and safety, a place o f rest, a place of sweet' compan ionship, and a place of deep affection. All these are to be found in fullest measure in Him who is to us, as He has been to His people all down the ages, their “dwell ing place,” or habitation. — F. J. H orsefield . " I f any man will do his will, he .shall know of. the doctrine, whether it be o f God” (John 7:17). True faith yields obedience even before it has knowledge. God commits the knowl edge o f His will to those who stand ready girt to do it. But can I will to do His will? No—not directly and apart from Him. “It is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do of his good pleas FEBRUARY 18 Faith Yields Obedience
ure.” Thus does He both give and main tain the will to do, and keep on doing, with mind and heart, the otherwise un lovely and impossible thing. — S elected .
should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you.” Pray for the saints’ love and unity among themselves; are not they often falling out? Christ prays for His people’s unity, “that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” — W illiam G urnall .
FEBRUARY 19 Continuing Prayer
“ God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you" (1 Sam. 12:23). Thou wilt pray fervently for others when thy heart is warmed into sympathy with them. Be "not discouraged in thy prayers for others, though an answer doth not presently overtake them. Thou pray- est for a rebellious child or a worldly friend, who yet continues to be so; take heed thou dost not presently think them past grace, and give over the work. Samuel saw the people he prayed for mend but slowly, yet he said: “ God forbid that I
FEBRUARY 20 Teacher
"The Holy Ghost, whom the Father mil send . . . shall teach you” (John 14:26). Does John mean to upset the office of teacher, and to lead every man to rely on his own judgment without regard to the opinions of others? Surely not! No, . there are a great many false teachers about gl-men who try to win you by some novelty or heresy, and you have itching ears and go after them, forgetting that, all the time, you have an infinitely better Teacher, One infinitely nearer too, infinitely, more trustworthy, for He led you to Jesus, j . Y The Holy Spirit is this Teacher, a Teacher in the heart . . . . Trust Him as Guide and Counselor; ask Him what to believe on every subject, always with the Word of God as the basis o f thought. B §— J. B. F iggis . FEBRUARY 21 The Appointed Task “For the Son o f man . . . gave . . . to every man his work" (Mk. 13:34). The Lord has given “to each one his work” (R. V .). All who belong to the house have some household work to do ; every vessel has its use ; no willing instru ment is meant to be idle. The Lord’s peo ple need never say, “No man hath hired us.” Nay, more than that, every member of the body has its own special function to perform, for the general good o f the whole body; and the failure of one to do that work, either puts a double burden on another, or causes the whole body to suf fer loss, . . . Let us See to it that we find our place and occupy it, lest the work of the Master is hindered by our fault. —:H ubert B rooke . “ Oh that men would praise the Lord . . . fo r his wonderful works to the children o f men!” (Psa. 107:8). It would not answer even for the Chris tian who has meant to surrender his will! and really wants to be perfected in the will o f God, to be made safe in his plans and kept in a continual train of successes. . . . Life needs to have an element o f danger and agitation, perilous, changeful, event ful ; we need to have our evil will met by the stronger will o f God, in order to be kept advised, by our experience, o f the im possibility of that which our sin has under taken. It would not even do for us to be uniformly successful in our best-meant and holiest works, our prayers, our acts o f sac rifice, our sacred enjoyments; for we should very soon fall back into the subtle power of our self-will, and begin to imagine, in our vanity, that we are doing everything ourselves. Let us trust our God. — H orace B u shn ell . Why should I ever grow weary? Why should I faint by the way ? Has He not promised to give me Strength for the toils of the day ? — S elected .
