NATS OPEN SEASON AT HOME AGAINST NAVAN GRADS ANIL JHALLI anil.jhalli@eap.on.ca

The quest for a second consecutive Bogart Cup title begins later this week for the reigning, defending Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) champions. The Rockland Nationals, who won the Bogart Cup last season, open the 2025- 2026 CCHL season at home against the Navan Grads on Friday, Sept. 19. Fresh off a perfect preseason record, excitement and anticipation from players, coaches and the community is starting to build. “It felt good just getting back on the ice, getting together with the guys and just getting in game mode,” said Mathys Laurent, a defenseman with the Nats. “We are dialed in, and we know we have a championship calibre team.” As Bogart Cup champions, the Nats earned a spot in the Centennial Cup tour- nament along with nine other hockey teams in a battle for junior hockey supremacy. The made it to the final four, but lost to the host team, the Calgary Canucks in overtime by a score of 3-2. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about that game, and how close we were from playing in the Centennial Cup final,” said Nats Head Coach Justin Pereira. “We were one shot away…but it’s a new season and now our focus is what we do this year. But our mindset is getting back to the

Centennial Cup and winning.” Despite coming up just short of a chance at playing in last season’s Centennial Cup final, the 2024-2025 CCHL season was a memorable one for the Nationals organiza- tion. Not only did the team win the CCHL’s top prize, ending a 49-year drought, but they had the best record during the regular season and winning the CCHL regular sea- son title, they also captured the Yzerman Division. The thought of playoff hockey and a

Bogart Cup has brought a new sense of joy, excitement and unity in the community, as the passion for hockey has reignited a fanbase. “It was cool to see how the community responded to us,” said Nats forward Gabriel Le Houillier. “If we were on the road, we would have fans in the stands and we were happy to bring a championship back to Rockland. We know how passionate they are, and how much this community loves hockey. And they really were behind us they

whole way and for us, it has been important for us to give back and take part in com- munity events and show our support for the people of this area and their causes.” Noah Laframboise, who plays defense for the team, knows the thought of repeating for a championship won’t be easy. “There are a lot of good teams in this league,” he added. “But as long we stay focused, play our game, we have a chance. And we have the depth and talent to get us there.”
