The American woman Is admitted to be the best-dressed woman in the world. Millions of dollars are spent annually to make her style-conscious. The average woman understands and practices harmony in dress; she does not wear the wrong hat or shoes with her ensemble; careful choice is made of jewelry and all accessories. Then, after being “turned out” a lovely specimen, she asumes a worldly-wise attitude, lights up a cigarette, and proceeds to make nil all of her charm. The mere insertion of a cigarette into a woman’s mouth changes her from a creature of beauty to a common and disgusting sight. Where is the con sistency in this? This editorial will probably fail to convert a single smoker but there is a satisfaction in once more raising one’s voice in protest against this of fensive indulgence which is ruininf our womankind. ★ ★ Mexican Liberals Protest , TN AN amazingly revealing report, the Committee on Co-operation in Latin America gives an account of the reaction of the liberals in Mexico to the recent attempt on the part of the Roman Catholic Church to increase its power. The occasion was the fiftieth anniversary of the coronation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, at which time the usual religious frauds and fanaticism were exhibited for the benefit of the credulous masses. The magazine Tiempo published a blistering editorial under the title, “A Week of Idolatry.” With almost un believable courage, Editor Martin Luiz Guzman attacks the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church in Mexico. While he admits his respect for all genuine religion, he indicts the Roman Church as a menace to the peace of Mexico and declares its true purpose to be political control and ecclesi astical enslavement. Following the publication of this article, the house of Senor Guzman was stoned. At the same time, a great dinner was given in his honor, at tended by the leading intellectuals of Mexico, which resulted in the estab lishment of a great liberal daily news paper to counteract Roman despotism.
O, Consistency! TTHE harmful effect of tobacco upon the human body is the subject of much debate. On one side, there is the indisputable fact that many heavy smokers live long, normal lives. Un doubtedly the reason for this is the amazing recuperative, G o d - g i v e n power of the human mechanism to throw off the baneful effects of the poison inhaled. On the other hand, there is the almost universal testi mony of athletes and medicài men that one is physically better off if he does not smoke. Surely, it cannot be denied that it is a severe punish ment to the delicate membranes of the respiratory system to subject them to the irritating smoke and gas gener ated by tobacco. However, we do not wish to discuss the matter from this standpoint at present. We point out the inconsist ency of the woman smoker. We claim that the most disturbing sight in today’s world is that of our fine American women and girls’ in dulging in this degrading habit. It is impossible to visit any public place without being forced to see well-dress ed, and apparently refined, women, many with graying hair, draw ciga rettes from their fancy containers, and puff away in brazen disregard of all beholders. Some things in life are hard to understand. How can a fastidious, meticulously groomed, and faultlessly attired woman tolerate this malodor ous, defiling and cheapening habit? Where is the consistency in being vigilant to the last degree that the hair; the hands and the face confbrm to the rigid standards of beauty, har- tnony and cleanliness, and then com pletely nullifying the effect by the use of tobacco? If you listen to the pronouncements of the advertisers by press and radio, you will find that it is a sin of the first magnitude to be guilty of unpleasant breath, and an unpardonable error to fail to daily cleanse both our garments and our bodies. But how in the name of com mon honesty can you link these feminine principles of cleanliness and hygiene with a habit that causes foul ness of breath, and produces in the clothing stale, unwholesome stench?
One Thousand Students fPHE Bible Institute of Los Angeles -*• has never had one thousand stu dents in attendance at one time. The present year is our greatest, with more than seven hundred and fifty enrolled. It is the foremost desire of many Biola friends that the day of one thousand student's may not be far off. We are entering into an extraordinary day .which calls for an all-out effort to Challenge young people to the service of Christ, and to prepare them ade quately to meet the needs of this, generation. But it is a far from simple task to care for the multitudinous duties con nected with the housing, feeding and training of one thousand students. While the Bible Institute of Los An geles was originally planned and built for a training school, the task of training as many as one thousand at once never entered the minds of the founders. So today such an expanded program calls for an entire revartip- ing of our facilities, and a general enlargement of our staff. There is a feeling of extreme ur gency which drives us forward. Our entrance into the atomic age arouses •-in our hearts the startling but thrill ing hope that the coming of our Lord may not be far away. If this be so, then this is our very last opportunity to reach out into the far corners of the world to win men for our Lord. It is now or never; God grant that for many millions it may be now. The Institute feels the need of your prayers. Will you, as a child of God, join us in a petition to our all-wise Heavenly Father that His perfect will may be operative in this institution, Which has been dedicated to Him?
