W HILE I was in Escondido, Cali» iornia, for a Bible conference, a Christian friend, Mr. Frank Rog ers, asked me if I would like to hear an incident with regard to one of my tracts, in which he played an impor tant role. Needless to say, I assured him of my desire to have him relate the story, not only for my own en couragement, but also for that of all tract distributors who should hear it. This is it: One beautiful Sunday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers took their daugh ter in their car from Escondido to Oceanside in order that she might boaru the train to return to the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, which she attended. The daughter’s ticket was collected before she entered the train and, as an accommodation, the train officials allowed Mr. Rogers to follow her to her seat with her suitcase. He meant to deposit the suitcase quickly and detrain at" i nee. But, although he hurried, Mr. Rogers was not speedy enough to reach the coach door be fore it closed—and the train started moving! I will allow Mr. Rogers to proceed with the narrative;
I walked back and sat down beside my daughter. I was thankful I had not taken the automobile keys with me. My yvife would comprehend what had happened, and could drive the twenty miles home and wait until I telephoned regarding my return. Then I recalled that .1 had not taken my wallet either. Here I was on the train without one cent of money! After de bating the matter in my mind, I decided not to tell my daughter of my financial predicament. The next stop was Santa Ana; about fifty miles from Oceanside. I left thé train at that point. My Trek Begins Now hitch-hiking is not one of my a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s , but being a stranger and penniless for the mo ment, I started right out on the high way to Oceanside—not, however, un til I had committed myself to the Lord for His guidance. We all know that “All things work together for good to them that love God, to thern who are the called ac cording to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28), but we do not always see unusual circumstances in that light at the time they are happening. I had not gone very far until I was
reminded afresh of my financial status. A Negro approached me with the familiar query: ’’Say, mister, have you got a dime? I’m broke!” I ex plained that,I did not have a cent with me and I told him the reason. He laughed heartily at my plight, and I continued my journey. Presently a. car whizzed by. One of its occupants threw a piece of paper at me. I was somewhat disappointed because I had not been offered a ride. Then it occurred to me that per haps the Lord had a purpose in their nQt picking me up, and my spirit was calmed again. As I walked on, I examined the bit of paper thrown from the car. It. proved to be a tract—a printed mes sage of salvation. To my amazement, it was entitled: “WITHOUT MONEY” ! That described my condition literally. Deeply impressed with the uniqueness of the circumstance, I read that tract with avidity. It presented salvation without money, without price, with out works and without waiting. It set forth the way of eternal life by per sonal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ who paid the price and finished the work of redemption when He died on the Cross for our sins and rose
