France in the Middle Ages; in some respects, our knowledge is more mi nute and accurate.”1 “Indeed, the more we study the old records in the light of the new knowl edge, the more we trust their fidelity in detail. Nothing better illustrates the truth of the saying that ‘A little learning is a dangerous thing,’ than the impetuous denials of Biblical ac curacy by the earlier archaeologists: in so many cases has further informa tion shown that the Old Testament was right, after all.”1 It is our purpose in the next few articles to show not only how the sci ence of archaeology has added its con firmation to the historical portions of God’s Word, but also to point out more particularly the way this remarkable science has added to our knowledge of the real meaning of Scripture. 1. Paul R. Bauman, A.B., Th.B., D.D. B UT thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and :seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased” (Dan. 12:4 R. V.). These words were spoken by God more than two and one-half millenni ums ago. The prophecy was given for “the time of the end,” and the signifi cant statement is added, that at such a time “knowledge shall be increased.” There are two generally accepted in terpretations of this word “knowl edge.” Some scholars assert that it applies to our.modern scientific age with the tremendous advances in all branches of learning which character ize it. Others suggest that the term refers to an increased knowledge of the Word of God, particularly of prophecy. Whichever interpretation is accepted for this passage in Daniel, it is signifi cant that during the past century the world has witnessed a tremendous in crease of knowledge involving two of the channels* through which God has revealed Himself to man—His world and His Word. The science which has added so much to our knowledge of God’s Word is archaeology, which has gone down into the ground to recover for us the material remains of the hu man past, a n d has succeeded in pushing back accurate knowledge of human history to a date several thou sand years earlier than Seemed credi ble a couple of generations ago. In the early part of the 19th century, there was no accurate history of Rome older than about 500 B. G. Greek his tory could not be traced back more than a hundred years earlier, and even Egyptian history reached no further into the past than about 650 B. C. Now, if the outlines provided by Herodotus, Strabo, Diadorus, Xeno phon, and others could be accounted as no more than picturesque legends, what could be said for such a “pre historic” figure .as Moses who lived about 1500 B. C., or for Abraham, whose experiences are dated at about 2000 B. C.? So reasoned the critics, who-so often presumed the Bible to be guilty of gross falsehood unless proven innocent. But a hundred years of ex cavating tells a different story! “It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that we are as well informed with regard to life in ancient Egypt or Babylon in the days of Abraham as we are with regard to life in Britain or
