Points and Problems 1. "And sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord" (v. 1). Eleazar was isolated for the particular task of caring for the ark. Strictly speaking, this is the basic meaning of sanctification. It has to do with the setting apart of an individual for the worship and service of God. In the New Testament there are three aspects revealed: (1) separation once and for all through the blood of Christ; (2) separation as a c o n t i n u e d process through the' .Word of God and the gracious influences of the Holy Spirit; and, (3) separation in the future from the presence of sin at Christ’s,Second Coming. 2. “If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then . . . " (v, 3). It is to be noticed in this verse that there are both negative and positive aspects of real repentance. First, it is a turning away from sin. But it is also a matter of a n ew heart-attitude toward God and His service. Further more, it is revealed that God begins to work in the life when true repentance takes place—“He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 3. “And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord" (v. 6). The pour ing out of the water seems to have been a symbolical act by which the Israelites showed their desire to pour out their hearts in repentance and confession to God. This was to' be done without reserve; nothing was to be held back. When Christ died at Calvary, He was “poured out like water” (Psa. 22:14). He gave Himself fully. When water is poured out, it cannot be gathered up again (2 Sam. 14:14). Thus is true r e p e n t a n c e : nothing held back, complete resigna tion to God, emptying oneself first of all sin and hypocrisy, a full con fession. When there is such a pouring out of the soul before God, it always ends in restoration and victory as it did in the case of Israel. One day as Hannah was praying In the temple, she promised God that if He would give her a son, she would allow him to serve the Lord all of his life. God heard her prayer, and sent to her and her husband a baby boy whom they named Samuel. When Samuel was old enough to leave his mother, she took him to the temple and left him there to help with the work in God’s house. Samuel helped Eli, the old priest, to take care of the temple.
