“The New Spiritism” “The New Spiritism” is the title of an interesting booklet just issued hy Pickering and Inglis, Rev. James Boyd being the author. It is an examination of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s late work “The New Revelation”. Sir Conan Doyle in his book sets out hy declaring that “God has given us no power at all which is under no circumstances to he used. The fact that we possess it is in itself proof that it is our bounden duty to study and develop it.” Mr. Boyd in answer says, “Be it so; but am I to use power given to me of God in opposition to His revealed will? With my tongue I can speak, hut shall I say, ‘My tongue is my own, who is Lord over me?’ Psa. 12:4.) My right arm may he strong enough to protect my friend, am I to use it to his destruction? I am formed in such a way that I am able to receive spiritual impressions; is it of no im portance from whom I receive them— from God or the devil? Is the power given to me to he used in ways forbid den hy the Giver? or in ways by Him appointed?” Sir Conan Doyle says as the result of his experiences in Spiritistic seances he has learned that in the world of spirits a man’s creed counts for nothing. In that sphere he finds people connected with every cult upon earth. The Bud dhist and the Mohammedan are there and according to Doyle the hater of the Lord Jesus and of all who call on His name is just as well off as is the be liever who died for His sake. In answering this Mr. Boyd shows how Conan Doyle is helping us on to ward the day of “Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abomina tions of the earth”. (Rev. 17:5.) He shows that the features most prominent in this system of evil are those of apos tate Christendom. Spiritualism is help ing to head up that amalgamation of all bloodless religions which is to bring upon those who would be true to the Bible in the last days the persecutions which prophecy declares will be so hor rible that the apostate system would be found drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the mar tyrs of Jesus. The feature of Spiritism and all other
cults as well which brands them as of the devil comes out clearly in Sir Conan Doyle’s book when on page 73 he tells us that too much has been made of the death of Christ. “It is no uncommon thing,” he says, “for a man to die for an idea. Every religion has equally had its martyrs.” Christ in His death is represented as having done no more than what others have done since the great war. Mr. Boyd well says in an swer that if what we are told in this book is true, the lads in France behaved themselves very much better than He did. “Supposing that when the -hour of battle arrived the soldiers were all in the same state of prostration as He was in the garden, how long would it take the enemy to occupy London, and even when nailed to the cross, He is compelled to confess that God has for saken Him. Leave out the element of atonement and you have lost the Christ of God.” If you have friends who have become infatuated with this book of Conan Doyle’s or with any of his magazine articles, send for a copy of this booklet and present it to them. Reunion in Eternity “Reunion in Eternity” is one of the timely new books that is now attract ing much attention. Sir W. Robertson Nicoll is the author. Many in these times are seeking the consolation of the assurance of immortality and to meet this need, the market has been flooded with many utterly unscriptural books and pamphlets. Sir W. R. Nicoll’s new book will come with comfort and conso lation to aching hearts and longing souls, and with a ring true to the Word of God it will restore the confidence of a fading faith for many who are grop ing in these days. In an opening para graph, the book says: “The subject concerns those only who are in Christ. Apart from His do ing, His dying, His rising again, His testimony, there is no doctrine of the future. The essence of personal Chris tianity lies in love to a personal Saviour. He has abolished death by His resur rection. He is the conqueror of the last
