THE K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S TRANSLATION TROUBLES The difficulties of translation are enormous. This well-worn fact has been recently discovered again by some South African missionaries who have had favorite English hymns translated into the vernacular for the benefit of their native converts. Months after they found out that their translator had been particularly free. His version of the well-known hymn which opens with the line, “Lord, dismiss us with Thy bless ing,” was, “Lord, kick us out, softly, softly.” a& ¿fe ONE ON THE WEATHER PROPHET Someone writes to an editor to know what Ananias did for a living and the editor replies: “The Bible does not tell us what Ananias did for a living. We are merely left to infer that he was a weather prophet.”

THE GREATEST MYSTERY A man once said to me: “I want you to explain to me the mystery of the choice of Judas. Why did Christ bear with Judas for three years?” I replied, “My friend, I have never had any time to think about the case of Judas,, because for the last fifteen or sixteen years at least I have been pon dering the mystery of Christ’s choice of me, and why He bears with me. That is the greatest mystery to me, and far greater than any mystery concerning Judas.” The man who knows his heart, and who reads rightly the rec ord in his own life of the love and patience of God with him, is always singing some such song as this— “That Thou canst love a wretch like me,
Yet be the God Thou art, Is darkness to my intellect, But sunshine to my heart.”
