2023 Master Plan

Park District Park System The Naperville Park District operates and maintains 138 parks across 2,474 acres of land. The NRPA established a classification system of park types that many communities have adopted throughout the years. Park classifications are important to distinguish the varying levels of open space, the minimum and maximum acreage, and designating development criteria and amenities suitable for each space. The Naperville Park District utilizes a modified version of this classification system for its parks and maintains its use today. This system also complements the park types listed within the City of Naperville’s Municipal Code 7-3-5 to assist in the land donation required by developments. Park classifications are also important since they differ in the health and recreation benefits offered: a neighborhood park may function as a venue for social interaction and nature contact, while a District Park can provide high levels of active recreation and opportunities for team sports; it is critical for a park system to provide a variety of functions to appeal to an equal variety of users (Frumkin and Eysenbach, p.3, 2003). As of this publication, the Naperville Park District 138 parks, 2 golf courses, and 4 facility sites are categorized by the following criteria:
