2023 Master Plan

Preservation/Conservation Areas (PA) No service area radius; no acreage limits.

17%

Preservation/Conservation Areas are intended to preserve significant natural or cultural resources, landscapes, and open space. Additional benefits include providing enhanced aesthetics and buffering; their use for recreation is a secondary objective because of this. These areas typically include dedicated watersheds or natural or non-developed areas. The locations and sizes of Preservation/Conservation Areas are dictated by the nearby natural resource. The suitability

of a particular natural or cultural resource to be designated as a Preservation/Conservation Area should be based on its ability to enhance the overall character of the community. The fundamental purpose for acquiring or receiving various natural or cultural resources as a Preservation/Conservation Area is to maintain and/or preserve existing conditions, so development within these areas should be very limited. Because of the limited recreational use within these areas, acquisition should be considered lower priority. There are 25 Preservation Areas (17% of all parks) totaling 234.96 acres (10% of all acreage)

Special Use (SU) No service area radius; no acreage limits.

8%

Special Use parks and areas are intended for specialized or single purpose recreation activities. They should be located to provide easy access for the entire community. Because there are so many different types of Special Use facilities, there are no specific size and development criteria. Examples of Special Use facilities include, but are not limited to, recreation centers,

senior centers, nature centers, community theaters, trap shooting ranges, community gardens, special event facilities, golf courses, aquatic facilities, and maintenance or support areas. There are 11 Special Use Parks (8% of all parks) totaling 430.67 acres (18% of all acreage).

Future Parks Future Park is a temporary classification for open space not yet owned by the Naperville Park District but awaiting the conveyance process. At this time, there is one park awaiting conveyance, a Neighborhood Park in Area 4 to be known as Heritage Place Park. This park is included as part of the Heritage Place development and replaces the formerly leased College Park in the same location. For the purposes of this plan, the park and its acreage are included in overall totals throughout.

Based on an inventory of all parks, golf courses, and facilities in the Naperville Park District system, the following chart provides an overview of the park types found in each Planning Area:
