2023 Master Plan

Open Space Considerations/Recommendations Due to the geography of this area, many of the parks are located in the southern portion. However, given the buildout development and the layout of uses, acquiring land to balance the distribution of parks may not be necessary or achievable. The presence of forest preserve properties (Herrick Lake, Danada) to the north help offset open space acreage when factored into servicing this area. An area of unincorporated land to the north and east is projected to build up with small pockets of residential developments throughout the next decade – see the Naper Commons Development where the Park District received Naper Commons Park through the Land Cash Dedication Ordinance. The City of Naperville completed the Plank Road Study to direct future growth in this area. The District should opt for land donations or research acquisition opportunities in the eastern section of this area to balance the future resident increase and align with the study. As referenced in the previous plan, several parks would fall in the City’s “5th Avenue Study”. The 5th Avenue Study was initiated in 2017 to reimagine the commuter corridor and the gateway to Downtown Naperville. The project is on hold at this time, but the Park District should continue working with the City of Naperville in determining how recreational and open space needs can improve the project area if it resumes.
