3. Tree and Shrub Care 3.1 Tree Irrigation Maintenance Level Guidelines

One to two irrigation cycles per month, May 1 through October 15, or as required and budgeted to maintain tree vigor of trees planted within 3 years. Water bags (gator bags) will be placed on each newly planted tree to aid in the effective watering during the first 2 years after installation. 3.2 Tree Maintenance Activities include corrective pruning, thinning, shaping, staking and guying, mulching, and fertilizing. Also includes effort in cutting, splitting, stacking, and delivery of firewood for support of NPD programs. Maintenance Level Guidelines Tree pruning is performed according to accepted arboricultural practices and standards to provide and encourage a natural healthy growth for each tree variety. High use and trafficked parks are visited every 7 years. Maintenance activities include pruning and removal of dead wood, suckers, water-sprouts, cross-branching, and low hanging branches. Corrective pruning such as thinning the crown for increased air movement and shaping are done as needed. The bases of the trees are mulched in a 4 feet diameter ring, 4 inches thick at the outside of the mulch bed and 1 ” maximum next to the tree trunk, with recycled wood chips that are available from NPD chipping or donated. Larger rings or mulched grouping are constructed to reduce trim mowing activities and increase health of the individual trees as needed. All tree rings and beds have a depressed edge no deeper than 3 inches surrounding the tree. New plantings will be mulched and fertilized by a surface application or a balanced slow-release fertilizer during the initial establishment. Soft wood variety tree trunks are wrapped in November and the wrapping is removed in March. Staking and guying are performed only when necessary, and is removed after 12 months – the exception is trees over 3 ½” in dbh . The second or third growing season, the trees are fertilized and pruned as needed. Specimen trees planted near ponds or rivers will be loosely wire-wrapped, such as chicken wire, to prevent beaver damage and re-checked and adjusted annually. Established trees showing signs of premature decline or stress may receive additional maintenance practices as warranted.
