Maintenance Level Guidelines

Disease and insect control is done on an epidemic or serious complaint basis. Control measures may be put into effect when health or survival of the plant material is threatened. 3.3 Tree/Brush/Stump Removal Activities include clearing/removal of undesirable, dead, or dangerous trees, tree stumps, and brush, assembly of equipment, site clean-up, and disposal of cuttings for public safety and appearance. Maintenance Level Guidelines Areas managed at Mode I, Mode II, Mode III and Mode IV levels will be free of diseased or damaged trees to provide a safe, attractive park environment. Weather permitting, all stumps in high traffic areas (no matter what mode) should be removed within 30 days of the tree removal. Section 2 thru Section 8 of the Riverwalk is considered high traffic. All stumps should be flush cut if possible at tree removal time. If this is not possible, staff should paint the remaining stump with orange paint. All stumps can be noted, then removed in the next cycle of stump grinding, which should be no longer than every 3 months, again, weather permitting. Depending on location within the park, stumps in natural areas (Goodrich Woods, Burlington Woods…) maybe left above grade with Park Operations Manager’s approval. Also, within these managed acres ( Mode V) , activity is limited to the preservation of public safety: damaged limbs will be removed, but may be left on- site to decay. Dead trees may be removed and the main trunk stem left to provide improved wildlife habitat where appropriate. 3.4 Shrub Bed Maintenance Activities include weed control, mulching, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide applications, pruning, bed edge maintenance, planting new shrubs, removal of dead plant material, dividing of plant material, and redesigning of beds. Maintenance Level Guidelines  PLANTING NEW SHRUBS – Shrubs will be installed and maintained according to recommended procedures for each species beginning April 1.  RE-DESIGNING OF BEDS – Shrub beds will be re-designed as needed and when resources are available.  PESTICIDE APPLICATION/WEED CONTROL – Control measures will be applied per target species in either granular or liquid forms when necessary.  MULCHING – Mulch applied yearly to maintain a depth of 4 ” for Mode I and II and III parks and every other year for Mode IV .  IRRIGATION – Irrigation in shrub beds on an as-needed basis May through September. Newly planted shrubs watered two times monthly for the first two years unless local moisture conditions dictate otherwise.  FERTILIZATION – Fertilization will be applied as necessary to maintain growth.  PRUNING – Pruning will be performed to maintain a neat and natural appearance. Thinning or rejuvenation will be performed as needed.  EDGING OF BEDS – Edging will be done in the spring, then as needed to maintain a neat and crisp appearance.  REMOVAL OF DEAD PLANT MATERIAL – Removal of dead plant material will be performed during spring clean-up. All shrub beds will be cleaned up from winter debris in April/May .
