Maintenance Level Guidelines

Outdoor Ice Rinks Construction, Maintenance & Operation I. Ice Rink Design Criteria A. Consider multiple use of facilities. B. Any surface may be used as a foundation, with the exception of sand, gravel or loose, porous soil. A heavy, non-porous soil is preferable. Barren soil is also preferred. C. Area chosen should be level and free of large rocks or other obstructions (minimum fall: 1"/100'; maximum: 6"/100'). D. There must be a water supply nearby (i.e., 3 inch fire hydrant or natural water within 500’ preferred).

II. Fall Preparation

A. Remove all litter and debris. B. Cut any grass as short as possible, rake area to remove thatch, as it acts as insulation and will delay frost penetration on the soil. Any loose material that is left on the ground will float to the surface when the flooding operation begins. C. All drains shall be covered with plastic and topped with 2 inches of clay. Drains should be plotted and marked so they can be located should it become necessary to drain surplus water from rinks. D. Before freezing weather sets in, it preferred to flood or spray the dry land surfaces that will be used for ice skating. This moisture will fill in the air spaces in the ground and will allow the frost to penetrate faster and deeper than normal. E. Hockey boards shall be erected before the frost is on the ground, prior to November 30. F. Remove snow to enhance frost formation early in the season.
