Salt Usage To lessen the risk of ground water and surface water contamination from chlorides that we apply, we will calibrate or ice melt application rates to be within industry standard. This commonly means that we will be applying less than four pounds of product per every 1,000 square feet of parking lot and walk surfaces. In many instances, a properly selected product, adjusted for the temperature will need no more than a rate of 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Example:
The parking lot at the Administration Building (320 W. Jackson Avenue) contacts 21,450 square feet.
From the charts attached, if the temperature is in the 25 to 30 degree range and holding, we could use rock salt at a rate of 1.5 pounds per thousand, which is around 32 pounds for the entire lot, for a single application. If the temps are considerably colder, we would want to switch products and go the magnesium chloride at a rate of 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet, or 65 pounds per single application.
