Maintenance Level Guidelines

Hands Special protection of the hands is required to maintain manual dexterity for the prevention of accidents. 1. If fine work is to be done with bare hands for more than 10-20 minutes in an environment below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, special provisions should be established for keeping the workers’ hands warm. For this purpose, warm air jets, radiant heaters, or contact warm plates may be used. Metal handles of tools and control bars should be covered by thermal insulating material at temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. If the air temperature falls below 60 degrees Fahrenheit for sedentary, 40 degrees Fahrenheit for light, 20 degrees Fahrenheit for moderate work and fine manual dexterity is not required, then gloves should be used by the workers. To prevent contact frostbite, the workers should wear anti-contact gloves. 1. When cold surfaces below 20 degrees Fahrenheit are within employees reach; gloves should be worn to prevent inadvertent contact by bare skin. 2. If the air temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or less, mittens should protect the hands. Machine controls and tools for use in cold conditions should be designed so that they can be handled without removing the mittens. Feet Special precautions must be taken for the feet because most employees do not work directly with the feet, as they do with their hands. Employees who are doing heavy tasks or those who may require them to sweat in temperatures less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit should ensure the following items: 1. The workers should change socks and any removable felt insoles at regular daily intervals. 2. Whenever the worker’s feet become immersed in water at air temperatures below 35 degrees Fahrenheit, they should immediately change into dry boots and socks. 3. If a worker ever experiences sharp pains (pinpricks) on the feet or toes, they should be immediately brought into a warming shelter. It is important to not try to heat this flesh too quickly; it will further complicate matters if the area has suffered frostbite. This area must be warmed slowly with layers to prevent the area from again being exposed to the extreme cold.
