Maintenance Level Guidelines

B. During the Dormant Season: (Large clearings are good to conduct when the ground is frozen to minimize compaction.) 1. It is preferred that dormant vegetation be removed in late spring. 2. Clippings may be removed from the site for aesthetic reasons. 3. Removing clippings annually for a number of years may reduce the fertility of the soils and encourage weeds. 3.3 Method – Prescribed Burning: (Burn Season is roughly November/October to March, or until the spring ephemerals bloom.) A. If allowed, prescribed burning shall be the primary method of long-term ecological management and weed control of restoration and naturalized planting areas. Burning shall be conducted annually after the second full growing season for a period of three years. B. Thereafter, prescribed burning will be conducted at irregular intervals during spring or fall so that on average, the site is burned at a minimum of once every 4 to 6 years. C. Prior to the commencement of prescribed burning, compile a burn plan that outlines acceptable environmental parameters to conduct a burn. The parameters must include temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction. In addition, the burn plan must include the number of persons conducting the burn, their level of training, safety equipment used, other technical equipment used in conducting the burn, emergency procedures, and a list of the names and phone numbers of emergency agencies (fire department, police department, etc.). D. The Owner of the burn property is responsible for determining if neighboring property owners must be notified and for conducting the notification procedure in writing or verbally as deemed necessary. 3.4 Method – Pruning: A. Pruning shall be completed using standard nursery practices.

B. Cuts on large woody limbs shall be perpendicular to the growth of the limb.

C. Cuts shall be immediately distal to a branch or internode.

3.5 Dethatching: A. If areas are neither mown nor burned for a period of 5 years, the site must be mown and dethatched using a rake or other dethatching implement, to remove built up duff.

B. Thatch shall be raked and removed from the site.
