SEPTEMBER 24, 1939 WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT SEEKING GOD’S KINGDOM M atthew 6:19-34 Meditation on the Lesson Positives and negatives, questions and answers, didactic statements of eternal verities, as well as marvelous promises —all these pack this passage with bless ing. Pondering carefully the questions the Lord here raises, we sense the auth ority and power of the One who speaks, and we willingly can ^accept as truth the terse statements of facts presented. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” “The light of the body is the eye.” “No man can serve two masters . . . Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Then our faith can lay hold on the precious assurances here revealed: “Your heavenly Father know- eth that ye have need of all these things.” “All these things shall be added unto you.” Clearly, concisely, and convincingly, God argues the two sides: temporal (or earthly) against eternal (or heavenly). He leaves the choice with us. We are not coerced or compelled but are told the factsT illustrated from nature— fowls, lilies, grass, and our own sta ture. We are forced to admit the truth of all He declares. He asks us to “be hold,” “consider,” and then to “seek.” He will do for us “exceeding abundant ly” if we obey. “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and know ledge of God!” (Rom. 1 1 :^ ). Hallelu jah! The choice between eternal treasure and earthly gain was not new even in our Lord’s day. Moses had the choice between the “treasures in Egypt” and the “reproach of Christ.” He made the wise choice and became honored through the ages as his name is linked with the “Lamb:” “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb” (Rev. 15:3). Joshua chose to serve God. Daniel and the three Hebrew youths purposed in their hearts to give God first place. The whole of Hebrews 11 is a record of faithful servants who sought first “the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” God’s faithfulness has rewarded them. Every young person is “seeking”-— but the question is: is his object one of eternal gain, or merely of temporal profit ? Helps for the Leader I. U ncertain R iches Two friends were in conversation. One told the other of a “good man who had died and left $30,000.” “What a pity,” said the other, “tlfat he left it behind when he might have sent it ahead! He is not likely now ever to hear of it again.” —G. B. F. Hallock.

nent family who became a dope fiend and drunkard, acquired the underworld nickname of “Dopey Madge” and was given up as hopeless by police in a score of big cities. INTERNATIONAL LESSON COMMENTARY [ Continued, from page 313] not have been able to see His inward beauty as we now do. Not only was He crucified by men, but He was also smit ten of God, even though God greatly loved his only Son. I will take this ham mer to break the shell of this walnut, reminding us of how Christ was smitten of God for our sins. Look! I told you that this was not an ordinary walnut. It is filled with beauti ful colors! Since Christ has. been smit ten of God, we see His beauty as we never could, had He not been smitten. We see the blue which tells us that He came from heaven and was the Son of God. Then there is the purple which re minds us that He is a King and is to have a throne. The red tells of His blood which cleanses from all sin. In looking at this walnut filled with beauty, I am reminded of the words of Isaiah 9:6, “And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” - •

A king once told a particular favor ite, “Ask what thou wilt, and I will give it unto thee.” The courtier thought: “If I ask to be made General, I shall readily obtain it. If for half the kingdom, he will give it to me; I will ask for something to which all these things shall be add ed.” So he said to the king, “Give me thy daughter to wife.” This made him heir to all the wealth and honors of the kingdom. So choosing Christ makes us heirs to all the wealth and glory of the Father’s kingdom (Matt. 6:33).—Selected. Salvation Army Activities Issuance of “Income Gift Contracts (Annuities),” a form of investment which provides a regular, high-percent age income for life, has become a per manent part of the Salvation Army’s financial program in the Central States Territory. Under the plan, the investor or his beneficiary is guaranteed irre ducible annual or semiannual payments until death. C. Y. Schaffer has been placed in charge of the Officers’ Retirement Fund Appeal, for which the residue of con tracts terminated by death is to be used. He reports that the Income Gift Contract (Annuity) plan has met wide public acceptance. “Every contract,” Mr. Schaffer ex plains, “is backed legally by all the Army’s property and resources. The 75- year history of the Salvation Army and its record during the 55 years it has operated in the Middle West are well known. It has built solidly from the very beginning, and each year, in good times and bad, has gained strength.” Mr. Schaffer has jUst completed a booklet, “The Man on Fire,” which ex- . plains the Officers’ Retirement. Fund and contains colorful, interesting stories of several dramatic cases in which Sal vation Army officers have rescued the fallen. One concerns a woman of promi
