Sustainability Manager – Imperial College London

Head of Environmental Sustainability – London School of Economics (LSE) LSE were seeking individuals with a proven track record in leading the delivery of environmental sustainability strategies. They required extensive experience of delivering measurable success in improving environmental performance and sustainability culture within an organisation. The focus on the campaign was to attract industry leading professionals from outside the sector and the successful candidate had extensive experience from the private sector. Their last five years was spent with the leading consultancy MACE on a number of cutting-edge schemes including Heathrow and the Ministry of Justice. They possessed an MSc in Environmental Decision Making. The campaign attracted 67 applications from total pack views of 371. These were reduced to a shortlist for final interview stage of 4 candidates. It was a two-stage process which included an informal with the line manager, campus tour and panel interview.

Associate Director of Sustainable Operations – University of the Arts The University of the Arts required an Associate Director of Sustainable Operations to replace an outgoing employee. The challenge was an incoming estates director was not starting for several months and as they wanted them to have a hand in hiring, a fixed term contract was decided. This was obviously a challenge due to people unable to leave permanent roles to take a risk on a temp-perm position, but leveraging our extensive network and brand, MRG promptly identified a candidate with a wealth of experience in energy management and utilities, who was able to work on a fixed-term contract. The campaign attracted 68 applications from total pack views of 355. These were reduced to a shortlist for final interview stage of 5 candidates. It was a one-stage process which included a verbal presentation, a campus tour, and panel interview.

Interim Head of sustainability City, London University

ICL created a new post of Sustainability Manager whos key remit was to ensure the implementation of Imperial College’s Sustainability and net zero strategies. The college were seeking an individual with experience of shaping, planning and delivering strategies that enhance an organisation’s sustainability performance. They had to possess demonstrable expertise in leading the delivery of projects and programmes (such as behavioural change, investment projects, transformation) resulting in improved sustainability performance. Our brief was to undertake a wide-ranging advertising campaign in addition to conducting a pro-active search campaign which focused on other leading higher education institutions, the NHS and medical research labs.

City, University of London came to us as they needed cover for adoption leave for a year. Due to internal delays the role became live once the incumbent had left and so it was imperative to find a replacement asap. The role needed someone with a similar background in creating a long-term sustainability strategy for a large and complex site, consisting of multiple portfolio types. MRG used their extensive network to find someone who was not only immediately available but came with a fantastic record of leading the sustainability for a similar sized organisation and dealing with high level stake holders.
