&/#3&'r#3*&'4 FARM TAX UPDATE The United Counties of Prescott-Rus- sell (UCPR) says that any changes to the farm tax rates are the provincial government’s responsibility and not up to local governments to decide. UCPR officials made the point during a meeting with representatives for the new provincial government during the recent Association of Municipalities of Ontario confe- rence in Ottawa. The Federation of Agriculture has been meeting with municipal and county councils earlier this year asking them to consider reductions to local farm tax rates to help the agriculture sector deal with rising operating costs. – Gregg Chamberlain

“I believe we accomplished a lot.” Guy Desjardins sums up his first four years as mayor of Clarence-Rockland. Desjar- dins is seeking to retain his seat on council on October 22, 2018. Desjardins’ career in politics began in 2006, when he successfully ran for a seat on council. “I have a background in agriculture and I noticed at the time that there weren’t any agricultural voices on council,” he stated during an interview. He then defeated Marcel Guibord during the 2014 municipal elections, becoming NBZPS i8F IBWF B WFSZ HPPE DPVODJM u IFTUSFTTFEi8FUBDLMFETFWFSBMEJGàDVMU projects.” These include, according to the mayor, the management of the 2017 flood, the repairs made to Clarence-Rockland’s many roads as well as the project for the two new fire stations. “Although the flooding that occurred last year was truly a disaster, I think our answer to it was a real success,” said the mayor. “The way members of our community came forward and helped each other out was incredible. It was real teamwork!” Roadwork was also high up on Desjardins’ MJTUPGBDDPNQMJTINFOUTi8IFO*DBNFUP power, there were a lot of roads that needed work,” he said. “I’m glad to say that we have repaired roads from all over the region, not just in Rockland.” 8IFOBTLFEXIBUIFJOUFOETUPBDDPN - plish if he’s re-elected, the mayor is quick to point to “an emergency room for Clarence- Rockland.” “If you happen to get very sick over the weekend, we have to go all the way to Ottawa,” he explained. “Our medical centre here is amazing, but they’re quite busy.” Desjardins hopes to obtain governmental funding for the project. “It would also help us keep our ambulances in our region.”
He also wants to successfully accomplish what he calls the 17/174 project, the wide- ning of the 174 high between Orleans and Rockland. “The matter has been debated for over 20 years,” he said.
Lastly, the mayor wants to keep taxes low. “I want to enhance our commercial development,” he added. “I want to get more commercial projects. That will help us keep our taxes low.”
