WELCOMING FALL It’s a Busy Month in the Elkins Family

As we cruise right into the fall season and say goodbye to summer, this lull can tend to drag a bit as we patiently wait for Halloween to roll around so we can kick off the holiday season. However, for our family, we have two birthdays to celebrate — and you also can’t forget about Labor Day! This year, both Beth’s birthday and Labor Day were on the same day: Sept. 5. Not only was it a fun extended weekend, but it was fitting, considering that for the first time in her life, Beth is joining the labor field, as she’s been a full-time, stay-at-home mom up until recently. As many of you know, Beth just graduated from nursing school and secured a job at St. Luke’s working on the telemetry floor where she will be monitoring cardiac patients. Before heading into nursing, Beth knew she had a passion for the medical field, and she is extremely happy with her decision and where she is today. Do you remember when the Mega Millions lottery reached over a billion dollars a few weeks ago? During that time, Beth and I had a funny and thought-provoking conversation. If we won the Mega Millions at that time, I asked Beth if she would still go to work at the hospital. She mulled it over for a second or two and then said, “Yes.”She worked really hard to get to where she is and seems to truly enjoy it. However, just a few short years later, [9/11] began to carry a second — brighter — meaning for our family.

thinking more deeply about it, I decided that I’d honestly enjoy starting up a charity and going to different areas of the world to conduct free dental work for those in need. This way, I could continue my passion and help others along the way. Well, obviously, we did not hit the lottery, and I’ll still be working here at Elkins Dental full time while Beth continues to become more acquainted with her new position.

This month, we commemorate the 21st anniversary of the horrible Sept. 11 attacks on our country. It’s with great sadness that we all stop to reflect on all those we lost and the families that were torn apart. I remember on this day in history, I attended dental school in Philadelphia, which was pretty close to New York City! In fact, some people live in Philadelphia and commute to the city for work. Being so closely connected to the tragedy is a memory I’ll never forget. However, just a few short years later, the day began to carry a second — brighter — meaning for our family. When Beth was pregnant with our sixth child, Adam, she jinxed us by saying she hoped he wouldn’t be born on the anniversary of this tragedy. But, lo and behold, eight years ago, on Sept. 11, Adam made us parents for the sixth time. Now, the day holds a vast mixture of emotions. This month, I hope you all had a safe Labor Day weekend. Before we know it, the holiday season will be upon us. I look forward to seeing you in the office soon. –Dr. Elkins

Then, she flipped the question back around to me. I don’t think I’d ever be able to quit practicing dentistry altogether because I wholeheartedly love it. I surely would not work as hard as I do now and decided that I’d likely bring in another dentist to help out and give me plenty of time off. But, when I really started

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BUN LEADS TO LEGAL ACTION The Story of 50 Cent vs. Taco Bell

In 2008, rapper 50 Cent filed an unlikely lawsuit against the fast-food chain Taco Bell. Was it an endorsement deal gone wrong? Quite the opposite. According to the rapper, the company had implied an endorsement deal in the media when there was none. Taco Bell, known for their quirky and humorous ads, had released a print ad formatted as a faux“letter”to 50 Cent, requesting that 50 Cent change his name to 79, 89, or 99 Cent as a part of their latest promotion. The letter reached the national press and even television … except for 50 Cent’s actual mailbox. In fact, 50 Cent had no idea Taco Bell used his name. By releasing the letter, 50 Cent became the face of Taco Bell’s whole campaign, too. The letter was part of a larger hip hop-themed campaign, and customers could go to the Taco Bell website and participate in a“Rap Name Creator”to discover their rap name. They also had a“Why Pay Mo’Rhyme Generator”that played hip hop music and a montage of“hip hop-themed scenes,”according to the rapper’s lawyer, Peter D. Raymond. As soon as 50 Cent found out about the letter on the news, he wasn't happy. On July 23, 2008, 50 Cent — whose real name is Curtis Jackson — filed a federal lawsuit saying they featured the rapper in an ad campaign without his permission and profited directly from

his celebrity status without paying him a multimillion-dollar fee. Raymond said his client sought $4 million in damages. In response, Taco Bell Corp. spokesman Rob Poetsch issued a statement saying:“We made a good faith, charitable offer to 50 Cent to change his name to either 79, 89 or 99 Cent for one day by rapping his order at a Taco Bell, and we would have been very pleased to make the $10,000 donation to the charity of his choice.”

In the end, both sides settled, keeping the terms of the settlement confidential and paying their own legal fees. So, it’s possible that 50 Cent was paid after all, but we’ll never know the exact terms of their legal agreement, except“both sides are satisfied,”according to Raymond. Since then, more companies have been careful about using celebrity names in their marketing without permission. It pays to think inside the bun, after all.

Natural Teeth Whitening: Fact or Fiction? A Word From Cheyenne & Ashlee

Who doesn’t want a brighter and whiter smile? After all, they don’t call them pearly whites just because. White teeth point to good health and hygiene

scrubbing your teeth with these ingredients too often can wear away your enamel and leave your teeth looking even more discolored. ACIDIC FRUITS Many believe that scrubbing with acidic fruits, such as lemons and oranges, can whiten your teeth because they contain digestive enzymes. However, just like with charcoal, prolonging your contact with these acidic foods can harm and eat away at the enamel on your teeth and potentially even lead to decay and cavities. OILS AND SPICES Oil pulling, which involves swishing oils such as coconut oil in your mouth, or relying on spices such as turmeric is said to have whitening effects. However, scientific research does not back this up. It’s better to be safe than sorry! Instead, some of the best natural ways to maintain a bright and white smile are to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, floss daily, limit staining foods (such as red wine, coffee, and tea), and avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Lastly, don’t forget to make it in to see us for your regular checkups and cleanings!

and are usually regarded as a very attractive attribute!

Recently, especially during the pandemic, DIY teeth whitening methods have taken those in the market for teeth whitening by storm. You may have seen natural methods on social media platforms that include oil pulling, charcoal, or even turmeric. However, it’s important to keep in mind that just because a method uses natural ingredients, it may not necessarily mean that it’s safe or healthy. Here are some truths surrounding some of the most popular natural whitening methods: SCRUBS Activated charcoal and hydrogen peroxide are commonly used to scrub away stains and add a polishing whitening effect to your teeth. However, according to the September 2017 edition of the Journal of the American Dental Association, there is not any evidence supporting charcoal being a safe or effective whitening ingredient. It should also be noted that using highly abrasive materials or

According to the American Dental Academy, fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, helps to strengthen your tooth enamel and can even reduce the amount of plaque buildup on the surface of your teeth. However, fluoride toothpaste only came about in 1914 — a little over 100 years ago! Before that, people relied on ground chalk, oyster shells, pulverized brick, or sometimes lemon juice and salt to strengthen their teeth! To pick out a toothpaste that contains fluoride, just check the label! If you’re wondering whether or not you’d benefit from using a fluoride toothpaste, check with your dental professional! We’ll be glad you asked! Some Toothpastes Contain Fluoride!

FIND YOUR BALANCE 5 Exercises to Improve Balance

Though we may not always think about it, balance is essential to just about everything we do in our daily routines. From simply getting out of bed, leaning over to tie our shoes, or even walking to the mailbox, we need good balance to keep ourselves steady while performing normal tasks.

Though balance training is important for everyone, it is especially important for those who have problems due to illness, weakness, or dizziness. It allows them to overcome stiffness or unsteadiness and to develop an awareness of body segments and how to align them. THESE EXERCISES HELP WITH BALANCE. Balance training involves exercises to strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright and improve stability. These types of exercises can be done as often as you like or even every day. Consider trying the following exercises: • Standing with your weight on one leg and raising the other leg to the side or behind you. • Putting one heel right in front of the other foot, as if you were walking a tightrope. • Standing up and sitting down from a chair without using your hands. • Walking while alternating knee lifts with each step. • Stretching and gentle movement as part of yoga or tai chi. Balance is essential to living a healthy, functional life. It’s important to incorporate balance training into your fitness regimen. That way you can decrease the risk of injuries and help move freely and confidently.

KNOW WHY BALANCE IS IMPORTANT. Balance is the ability to control your body’s position, whether stationary or moving. It is a key component of fitness that many people neglect while developing their fitness regimen. Balance training is a great way to help your body recognize where it is and control movements in a given space. When the body knows where its limbs are in space — known as proprioception — it is able to produce smooth, controlled movements with fewer risks of injuries. Reaction time and agility are also improved with balance training. The body learns how to quickly correct itself but not overcompensate and has the ability to quickly change direction effectively and efficiently.
