working hard on the whole House song for weeks and the backing band and small vocal group had also been working on their pieces. On the evening, which was full of entertainment and an array of talent across a large number of performances, Jacobs House performed the Kiwi classic Slice of Heaven by Dave Dobbyn. They did the song justice, performing very well and led by Logan Marshall as the conductor and backed up well by the band of Josh Durant, Luke Hearne, Tim Tolerton, and Jaspar Thomas. The small vocal group, which was made up of Angus Gifford, Alexander Law, Angus Whitteker, and Josh Durant, sang the Beach Boys’ song God Only Knows . They did an outstanding rendition and after all the performances were complete, the adjudicator had the tough job of deciding the placings for the particular categories. Jacobs House was first equal with Condell’s House for the small vocal groups. REACTION House Plays Festival House Plays were held over two nights, with half of the Houses presenting their plays on Tuesday night and the other half presenting on Thursday night. It made for two entertaining nights, with plenty of laughs and enjoyment to go with
the storytelling. Our Jacobs boys wrote their own play this year and entertained the crowd. The play told the tale of a Jacobs student who missed out on being Head of House, and raged war against the current Head of House to dethrone him. If not for a group of heroes supporting the Head of House, he would have faced certain defeat. It was entertaining and humorous and received plenty of laughs and cheers from the audience. The best part was that all of the effort and energy put into writing the play and performing it so well delivered 1st place in the House Plays competition. Congratulations to all boys involved and Jaspar Thomas and Charles Beale for writing the play. House Chess The Jacobs chess team took out the interhouse chess competition for 2023, claiming the title in a hard-fought victory over Richards House. Our team beat School House and Flower's House on their way to the final. Well done to Arthur Woolhouse, Angus Whitteker, Ferg Richards, and Jaspar Thomas for taking out the final. Cross Country In the final week of the term, the annual full school cross country was held in Hagley Park. We had a good
number of boys compete and finish the course well, with two titles from the four race grades. Henry and Louis Hiatt took out their respective grades, with Louis winning the U14 race and Henry the U16. Several Jacobs boys finished in the top 20 in their grades, including Harry Blakely, Nick Rayner, Leo Kim, Darce Terpstra, Lucas Minehan, Ashwin Thomas, Jaspar Thomas, and Finn McCormack-Young. Senior House Cricket In senior House cricket, Jacobs reached the semi-final against Harper House and won by the slimmest of margins to face Flower's House in the final. It was cold and the clouds were hanging low, but the boys got stuck in, trying their best to get a result before the rain arrived. We batted first in trying conditions, producing some great shots before rain made conditions tough for both teams. Unfortunately, on this day, the opportunities were not as many as we would have liked and Flower's House secured the victory. House Haka The annual House Haka competition was completed at the end of week 8. All 10 Houses performed well. Jacobs House was led well by Charles Beale, putting together a solid performance and earning 3rd place. INDIVIDUAL/GROUP HIGHLIGHTS Several Jacobs boys performed well in their chosen areas. Among the highlights, Harry Blakely represented College at the Bowls Canterbury Secondary Schools Regional Championships. On what was a great day for a roll up on the pristine green, Harry performed fantastically well, bowling his way into the semi-finals and placing 3rd overall. At the end of the year, he competed in the Canterbury Years 9 and 10 Bowls Tournament, along with another College student, and took out the title. In hockey, special milestones were marked by Finn McCormack-Young and Josh Durant, with both having 50 caps for the 1st XI.
