a positive tone for the upcoming secondary school journey. The Year 13s, returning for their final year, showed enthusiasm and created a welcoming atmosphere that resonated throughout the day and showcased the positive relationships that develop over time. Icebreakers and a school tour kicked off the day for the Year 9s, providing a chance to familiarise themselves with their new home. A classic Rolleston House barbecue lunch, a refreshing swim in the school pool, and ice blocks were perfect on the hot day. The afternoon continued with a challenging escape room in town, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among the new students. The official start of the school year kicked off for the Year 9s with a welcome Chapel service filled with metaphors of new beginnings represented by new shoes and carabiner clips. The anticipation was palpable as the rest of the House prepared to return over the next few days. Sports played a significant role in the term, with the Christ’s College Swimming Sports being a notable highlight. Rolleston House performed admirably, securing a respectable 4th place overall with 179 points. Jake Boyd’s outstanding achievement in winning the U14 Individual Swimming Cup with 70 points added to the House's success. The House also excelled in junior backyard cricket, securing convincing wins against Richards and Corfe. Luke Mostert's remarkable performance, hitting six sixes, showcased the strength of the junior sportsmen and the payoff of courtyard cricket training.
In the realm of academics and individual achievements, students were recognised in Assembly for their accomplishments. Joshua Hooker received acknowledgment for his Outstanding Scholarship result in Music, while Adrian Chang, Oliver Walker, and Seann Zhao were awarded their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Jake Boyd's prowess in swimming was further celebrated with his U14 Swimming Cup. Musical performances by Lucas Zhong and Jago Wallace showcased some of the diverse talents in the House and Joshua Hooker's prestigious position as concertmaster in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra added to the House's musical achievements. The term concluded with a variety of activities, including courtyard cricket, Rubik's Cubes, ‘knee cricket’, Twister, Jump Jam, and creative cooking in the Year 13 common room. The House photo captured another year of Rolleston faces, and Easter eggs generously shared by Jack McKeown went down a treat. In a display of social responsibility, many Rolleston boys participated in a Round Square event to support the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Additionally, the ‘Sleepout for Homelessness’ service activity, led by Dr Swanson and Aaron Kwak, raised nearly $4000 for the City Mission, demonstrating their commitment to community service. A group of Rolleston boys visited Spreydon School, continuing a positive relationship that has developed over several years, to help at a Push Play event. The dedicated House Mentors, including Dr Graeme Swanson, Warren Lidstone, Sam Stevenson, Victor Sue- Tang, and Sarah Loughnan, played a crucial role in fostering a supportive environment. The House was led by the dynamic duo of Jack McKeown as the Head of Rolleston House and George Brakenridge as the Deputy Head, supported by the Year 13 Rolleston group.
