It was great to be able to welcome our new Year 9 boys into the House with our traditional welcome lunch in the School House backyard. It was lovely to see everyone back together after what had been very different past few years. The school year started on the last Sunday of January with us welcoming our new Year 9s and their families. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, the new boys are Arthur Brown, Hugo Grigg, George Hadden, Sam Hurst, Max McCone, Blake Nation, Max Nelson, Hugh Shand, Jono Simpson, William Smith, and Wilfie Wells. All ready and eager take on the challenges and new adventures secondary school and boarding have to offer. Within minutes, it was pleasing to see your own unique personality come out and the brotherhood start. You boys have bonded tightly as a group and have made a great start to your time here and the best is yet to come. Your journey has begun and before you know it, we will be farewelling you in four years. The other young men we welcomed into the School House community this year were Zack Jia at the start of the year and Jordan Li at the beginning of Term 3. Both Zack and Jordan joined us in the Year 10 year group, having originally started their schooling journeys in China. Both boys quickly settled into School
House life and before we knew it, had become true School House men.
INTERHOUSE EVENTS Athletics Day The first major event on the School House calendar was the Athletics Day. This year was going to be different from other years, with College hosting this event off-site for the first time at the Ngaˉ Puna Wai sports complex. Unlike other years, with Upper being out of action, we were unable to run the preliminarily heats. To replace these qualification heats, boys from the House had to be nominated to compete in the various events, with the allocation task falling to Matthew O’Connor and Jack Sutherland. To complicate matters, each event was limited to a set number of participants. To Matthew and Jack’s credit, they worked tirelessly to ensure that ALL the boys were entered to compete in at least two events on the day. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not come to the party and the event was cancelled because of rain. House Shoot Following this event, the annual house shoot was to be held. We wanted to run the event earlier because of lambing while also accommodating those attending Athletics Day. A huge 'thank you' to Vikki and Matthew Gould, who were willing to open their farm to us and host this wonderful event. Unfortunately, again the weather disrupted our plans. Thankfully, we found another day, with Will Gould winning the overall best award and the parents defeating the boys in the final shoot-off. A very special thank you to Vikki and Matthew Gould for generously hosting us at their lovely home.
