INTERHOUSE EVENTS: OPEN Swimming A very competitive swim meet at the start of the year set the tone for what was to be a successful 2023 for the House. The boys swam well, with impressive individual and team efforts across the board. The senior team of Matthew Flint, George Grace, James Drury, and Finlay Sharpe won both of their relays and inspired the junior 10-by team to victory in its contest. The seniors came close in their 10-by-25m event, narrowly missing out to Julius in the final few metres. In individual performances, Will Coughlan and Alex Johnson were 3rd in the U14 and intermediate age groups, respectively, and George Grace and James Drury placed 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in the senior category. Overall, we finished the swimming competition in 2nd place.

Athletics Day Sadly, despite the efforts put in to sign competitors up to the myriad events, Athletics Day was cancelled due to inclement weather. However, the week prior, the 3000m and some field events had already been held at Ngaˉ Puna Wai. Somes was well- represented among competitors. In the U19 category, Matthew Flint and Callum Gard put in respectable performances to finish 6th and 10th, respectively. Alf Markham and Samuel Belcher came 9th and 11th, in turn, in the U16 group. In the U15 category, Josh Shannahan finished 6th and Jack Howard narrowly missed out on a podium finish by 12 seconds, coming in 4th. Noah Madgwick represented Somes among the juniors, finishing 7th in his race, but with a time that would have put him 4th in the next age-grade up. Cross country The cross country, by contrast, went off without any hitches, with

the boys mostly enjoying their run around Hagley Park. Overall, they did well. Noah Madgwick finished 5th in the U14 grade, while Jackson Grace and Marcello Ferguson came in 3rd and 7th, respectively, in the U15 race. In the U16 grade, Finlay Sharpe, Samuel Belcher, and Alf Markham all finished in the top 20, and in the senior event, Matthew Flint and Callum Gard both managed top-10 finishes. House Music House Music is the pinnacle of the boys’ interhouse efforts in Term 2. This year, George Howard was the one to apply his diplomacy skills to the task of getting the Year 13s agreeing on a House song. It was not easy, but once the decision was made, the whole House got in behind it and began practising One Direction’s You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful with something approaching enthusiasm. While at first it sounded like One Direction
