CULTURE Archives

If there has been one thing on the archivist’s mind this year, it is 2025 and the preparation for the dodransbicentennial of College. It will be 175 years since the Scheme for the Establishment of College on 21 May 1850 was signed off in the Office of the Canterbury Association. As they say, much water has gone under the bridge since then. Buildings have gone up and buildings have come down. Thousands of hours

of academic, co-curricular, and non-teaching commitments have been contributed by staff and by the time 2025 is reached, it is expected that there will have been more than 16,500 boys enrolled at College. The culmination of all that thinking will need to wait. Meanwhile, the day-to-day life in the archives must go on. Answering emails, arranging digitisation, responding to a myriad of staff, Old Boy, and public requests, untangling

the odd mystery, writing for In Black & White and College , and saying ‘yes’ to accessions. Three accessions stand out this year. The first was the collection of cricket scoring books and photographs that detailed longstanding games in Geraldine between Christ’s College Old Boys and a team gathered from those who had attended English Public Schools.
