Woolhouse’s remarkable recovery after a challenging initial game, along with consistent performances from Henry Acton-Adams and Angus Whitteker, led the A Team to claim the top spot. This victory earned the team a place in the High School National Finals, held later in the year at Saint Kentigern College. Additionally, the A Team played a pivotal role in organising the House chess competition, a highly competitive annual event at College. In a surprising turn of events, George Simonsohn defeated top player Bill Li with an aggressive tactic. The final standings were as follows: 1st Jacobs 2nd Richards 3rd = Flower’s and Somes 5th Corfe

Tom Eyre-Walker, and Finlay Benson joined the A team members. Bill Li and Arthur Woolhouse secured 1st place in their respective divisions, while Jack Gorrie earned 3rd place for Year 9. At the much-anticipated nationals

in Auckland, the A team faced the best high school players in

the country. While they displayed flashes of brilliance, maintaining consistency proved challenging. The team finished 7th overall, and Angus Whitteker received a 2nd-place medal for ‘best of board 4’. Results aside, the tournament provided invaluable experience, and each game was recorded for analysis and future learning. At this point, College extends special thanks to Arthur’s parents for attending the tournament and providing vital support. In summary, the College Chess Club achieved excellence in a range of championships while nurturing their love for chess. The club eagerly anticipates the upcoming year, welcoming any boy with a desire to get involved and learn the game.
