CULTURE Theatresports

Theatresports is alive and thriving at Christ’s College, with four successful and talented teams across all year levels showcasing their exceptional abilities in improvisation this year. Two teams reached The Court Theatre Finals, with one taking home the Junior Theatresports Competition trophy. SENIOR COMPETITION With two dynamic and experienced senior teams performing this year, we were virtually guaranteed a spot in The Court Theatre finals. Our Senior B team was bursting with the vitality of Year 11 students Charlie Doutch, Alex Johnston, and Angus Vincent, alongside newcomers James Burt and George Grace (Year 12), and led by experienced Year

13 Elliott Grey. They began their heat with a whimsical Word at a Time , followed by Blind Dub , and finished their series of games with Typewriter , where a poor dog injured himself chasing a squirrel up a human tree. Sadly, this emotional journey was not enough to take down a very apt Riccarton team. Our Senior A team starred some of College’s most daring and unexpected players. Team captain William Sudell inspired his crew of misfit Year 13s – Sam Cross, Otto Elworthy, Thom Bell, and Thomas Moggie – and his brother, Hugo Sudell (Year 12) – to a hard-earned victory in their heat. Playing on the main stage of The Court Theatre to a raucous audience, without Captain Sudell, we were up against

some of Christchurch’s finest improv teams. After a brilliant Shared Style Story full of convincing accents, there was a delightful Ballet , which showed off our dancing prowess. We clawed our way to 3rd equal with Yearbook , where Hugo, playing the disgruntled staff member running the ‘Conspiracy Theory’ club, was awarded a bonus point for his excellent characterisation. While our team put on an animated performance, Papanui High School took home the trophy. Both teams performed valiantly, and our leavers should be exceedingly proud. What an absolute privilege to have worked with them, and special thanks to Shannon Small for his work with the teams this year.
