boys selected to run for Canterbury based on their performances at the Canterbury Secondary School Championships. A maximum of 16 athletes can compete in each event, with the boys competing against the top South Island athletes. A top- eight result meant they made a final in that event, progressing from heats or making the top eight from the first three attempts in the field events. Australian Junior Track & Field Championships Brisbane, 13–16April AJ Madondo competed at this event in the U18 grade at the Queensland Sport & Athletics Centre. Results 5th 200m – 21.86 (personal best) 9th Triple Jump – 13.28m 12th 100m – 11.00 (personal best) AJ was also a member of the New Zealand U18 relay team that placed 2nd in the Australian national competition. The team broke both the New Zealand U18, and U19 records, finishing in 41.46. Team members: Josh Lotsu, AJ Madondo, Kahurangi Cotterill, Kadin Taylor. AJ represented Athletics New Zealand in the relay and the triple jump, and Christ's College in the sprints. Athletics Canterbury Annual Award AJ Madondo was named Junior Athlete of the Year at the Athletics Canterbury Awards. AJ also won the O’Grady Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding track and field athlete still attending school. National Secondary School Athletics Championships and Road Race Nga¯ Puna Wai, 8–10 December This event returned to Christchurch to celebrate the 50th year of competition. The first event was held at the original QEII venue as a test run of the track facilities prior to the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. About 1100 athletes attended over three days, with mixed weather conditions, including a strong southerly and rain on the Sunday morning. Some athletes struggled to deliver their best as a result.
