many personal best performances. To achieve a personal best is a significant achievement at any time, but to peak at a championship event is impressive. Special thanks to Dr Briar Wait for her organisation and co-ordination of this event. As well as getting the athletes entered, she also helped to coordinate our volunteers on our long jump duty event. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this event run smoothly, particularly those helping in the cold on Sunday. Well done to the College coaches – Bev Peterson with the sprints, Tom Turner with the pole vault, Yo- Ahn Lin with the throws, and Matt Thatcher with the triple jump. Some boys had personal coaches, and I want to acknowledge their many hours of work with our athletes. Matt Thatcher coached AJ Madondo to a national title in the Triple

Jump and another athlete to 4th place in the same event. Yo-Ahn Lin coached two athletes to a throws final, including a 2nd place for Lui Tupuola in the Junior Hammer, and Tom Turner coached Otto Church to 3rd place in the Junior Pole Vault. All coaches achieved many personal best performances with their athletes. Some boys can compete in their grades for another few years, so their results are measured against older athletes who are physically stronger. AJ Madondo was our most successful athlete from a medal perspective, winning the Senior Triple Jump and finishing 3rd in the 100m final. Unfortunately, he was carrying an injury in his 100m race, and it got worse, so he had to withdraw from his 200m final. AJ was named in the NZ Secondary Schools ‘paper’ team based on his results. If there was

an international secondary schools championship, he would feature in the national team. AJ also received a travel grant for a major Athletics New Zealand championship event. A top-eight placing is a national finalist after one to three rounds of heats (except for pole vault and hammer, where there are small fields of fewer than eight). AJ Madondo – Year 13 1st Senior Triple Jump – 14.17m 3rd 100m – 10.87 200m – withdrew from final with injury Lui Tupuola – Year 10 2nd Junior Hammer – 43.68m (PB) NT Junior Discus Jake Boyd – Year 9 3rd Junior Javelin – 38.28 (PB) 4th Junior Discus – 44.21 (PB) 13th Junior Shot Put – 10.54
