on the cycleways of North Hagley Park. The weather was excellent for racing, with a gentle breeze to keep the athletes cool. As well as individual results, there was a team competition in each grade. College won the Year 9 event and secured 2nd place in the senior event. However, the junior team only had one runner because of illness. Overall, College performed well. Each boy tried their hardest to achieve their personal best time and battled for places in the home straight. If you divide the run times by distance, there are some fast cadences.
HARRIERS This year, the Harrier Club did not operate because of a lack of boys wishing to take harriers as a winter activity. While disappointing, it is the reality of the change in sport preferences. I am hopeful of more interest next year. Some College boys ran in interclub events with registered clubs during winter. College students still attended the secondary school events run by School Sport Canterbury and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association. I was grateful to Jack McKeown who helped me, as captain, at those events. COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP For the second year, the championship was held on the last Monday of Term 3. There were too many clashes with other sports on our usual May date and staff and student feedback indicated the September date was more suitable. While this was a ‘whole school’ event, many boys were unable to take part for a range of reasons. It will become a voluntary event in 2024, with Houses and boys still able to compete for House cups and individual titles. Regardless of the turnout, it was another great day of racing across all the grades, with a staff team also competing. The event’s success was the result of efficient staff marshalling and the clean-up, combined with gap students keen to help. Thanks to Paul Rodley, who continued to play a key role in the event, with his barcode system producing results electronically.
