team was rewarded with 3rd place. Congratulations on their efforts. The weather was excellent for racing over a demanding 1km lap, with two hurdles per lap. Most boys ran great races, but a few were slowed by breathing issues or a ‘niggle’ on the run. Thanks to Oscar Brown for his help at the finish line and David Hiatt for his excellent photos. On Saturday, two boys competed in the junior 4km race, and four boys ran in the senior 6km race. On Sunday, all the boys competed in the 4x2km Regional Cross Country Team Relay. The boys were split over several Canterbury teams. Generally, it is a demanding event, with two to four runners crossing the line every second. The races are run only two to five minutes apart, and there is a 1km–1.5km spread from first to last. At the start of each race, the ground vibrates. All our boys had good races. Unfortunately, Otto Church had a mishap at the start. Otto had targeted a top-10 result. However, his fall at the start meant he had to move up from about 35th to get into the top 10. He held strong for the first lap, but the demands of working twice as hard to get back into the top group took its toll. However, at this level, 16th place is a very creditable finish, even on a good day. Otto showed remarkable mental strength to return

NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The 49th New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships and the 7th New Zealand Secondary Schools Regional Cross Country Team Relay Championships were held at Massey University, Manawatuˉ Campus, Palmerston North, June 17–18 2023. Six athletes represented College at the event, with the course split over two sections in a 2km loop. The first 550m was around a rugby field and the next 1450m was over demanding, undulating farmland, with many short, steep climbs and descents. The ground was soft to muddy, and there were injuries on the course. While it rained at the weekend, the wet weather held off during the runs.
