the country. In what was a turn up for the book, the College crew flew out of the blocks and had a half- length lead as the field approached the end of the first quarter. As the field reached the halfway point, St Bede’s College and Hamilton Boys’ High School crew had drawn level with College. With 500m remaining, College’s A crew threw in a mad flurry of strokes and this change of gear moved the crew away from the chasing pack to finish a very good 4th. This race proved to be the best race that this crew raced all season and one that left everyone on the bank thinking what could have been. After the regatta, Charlie Poulter and Fergus Johnston were offered New Zealand Junior trials. Charles Beale was also offered a South Island U18 trial. In what has been a long time coming, both Charlie and Fergus were selected for the 2023 New Zealand Juniors crews, with Fergus selected for the junior men’s eight and Charlie for the junior men’s pair.
A huge thanks must go to the coaches – Malcolm McIntyre, Tony O’Connor, Andrew Taylor, Liam O’Leary, Nathan Luff, and Jack Chapman – and manager Chris Sellars. At the start of the season, they set out the blueprint for all the success the boat club experienced when they rearranged how the various squads were going to look and train. A final acknowledgement must go to the parents who spent countless hours assisting the club in many capacities. From raising funds to help plant and equipment purchases, through to cooking more than 4000 meals for the boys while they were away on the various training camps. Their support and assistance have enabled the Christ’s College Rowing Club to be the club it is today. Thank you.
