well, as we usually trained in heavier conditions in Canterbury. The Secondary Schools Teams Racing National Regatta began with a few weeks of intense training at the end of Term 1 and into the holidays before our departure for Algies Bay, north Auckland. The regatta faced massive weather disruption, with a wet and blustery week of sailing. The first two days were blown out because of strong, onshore easterly winds, mainly due to the intense La Nina weather pattern this year. After a forced change of course location to escape the strong, over- regulation onshore easterly flow, the boys managed three solid days of highly competitive sailing against the best teams in the country. The very creditable 8th overall out of 28 teams in the national competition reflected our aim to start and continue in the highly competitive top gold fleet after three full rounds of sailing was achieved. Such a gritty performance in very challenging, windy conditions was exactly what this young team

needed, given that the skippers were all in Year 11 and Year 10, meaning we now had a settled team for the next two seasons. The win over Auckland Grammar School – the team that placed 3rd in the final round – was a fantastic result for College. Will Leech continues his stellar rise up the ranks of youth sailing in New Zealand, finishing 2nd in the 29er Youth trial to represent the country at the world championships. He was also selected to sail in the Waszp fleet among young adults much older than himself for the first SailGP regatta run in the country on Lyttelton Harbour. Other sailors to raise the College flag at the event included Nico Blundell (Year 10 Condell's House) and Jack Farquhar (Year 9 Rolleston House), who both spent time racing in the RS Feva class used to include local sailors in the SailGP experience. Alan Viles (Year 13 Condell's House) deserves special mention for going the extra mile with help on the day-to-day team management and organisation

above and beyond what is normally expected from a student, especially at the major regattas. He was recognised by being awarded the Grigg-Kidner Cup for contribution to sailing. Edward Foote was a recipient of the most improved sailor. He shows much promise for the future with his enthusiasm and growth in confidence this year. I personally must thank Shelly Jackson for the tireless work she does with team communications via Schoolbox and all her detailed organisation for the major events. This work is unseen and unsung so must be acknowledged fully each and every year. Victor Sue-Tang and our coach, Johnathan Clarke, must also be thanked for the many hours of training and work with the team – both on and off the water – over the whole year as we strive to improve our team performances and skills at all levels for all team members.
