SPORT Surfing

MiC: Samantha Squire Coach: Nolan Hungerford

The surfing squad enjoys after- school sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays and time in the water early on Thursdays. A group of boarders also regularly surfs – under the guidance of Nolan – during the week. While the surfers’ skills range from beginner to expert level, all have enjoyed surfing sessions off Sumner, New Brighton, and Taylors Mistake. While several College surfers compete nationally, others are still learning and having fun. Year 12 student Archie Whithear has enjoyed a standout season on the longboard, finishing 3rd in the Malfunction Open Men’s Division, 4th in the New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing Open Men’s Division, 1st in the Canterbury Scholastics for the third time, and 1st in the Tuawera Longboard Classic U20 Division.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Tai Mckenzie has finished 2nd in the U16 Canterbury Schools Surf League
