MiC: Shelly Jackson Managers: Shelly Jackson, Victor Sue-Tang Coaches: Michael Hamel, Jaafar Moussa The table tennis season began in Term 2 with 29 students signing up and playing open challenges for ranking on the ladder over the first two weeks. We were able to enter six teams in the Christchurch Secondary Schools competition this year, with our A team in the A Grade Open competition. Peter Wu, Calib Wyness, Gordon Wyness, and Leo Kim made up this team and enjoyed a great season, making the finals. With the Wyness brothers unable to play because of illness, Tom Lee and Harry Penn had to step up from the B team for a tough match that Burnside A won, 7–2. In Division 1, CC B narrowly lost to Burnside B, while CC C4 beat Rolleston to finish 3rd in Division 2.
The boys benefited from the very experienced coaching talents of Mike Hamel and Jaafar Moussa. Mike has been coaching at College for many years, has won numerous South Island and North Island titles, and is committed to developing the skills and game in young players, along with positive sportsmanship. This was Jaafar’s first season coaching for Christ’s College. He is originally from Lebanon, where he coached the national team in various international
teams battle it out in the senior and junior draws. The senior finalists were Somes House and Richards House, with Richards taking the win. Richards House played Condell’s House in the junior finals. Richard also won to secure a clean sweep for 2023. The Christ’s College Table Tennis Club Cup for 2023 was awarded to Peter Wu, our first ranked player and captain of the A team. Peter has made the College A team since 2021 and his understated yet consistent contribution to school table tennis has been appreciated by other students, coaches, and staff. My particular thanks to Lionel Randall and Victor Sue-Tang who, along with the coaches, have supported the boys with their time and energy to make it both a successful and fun season for all. 2021, when he began coaching in Canterbury. Currently, Jaafar works as the Junior Development Officer for Table Tennis Canterbury. He has also recently been appointed coach for the New Zealand men’s team. Both coaches were impressed by the improvement they saw in the boys’ play over the season. The annual interhouse table tennis competition was held in May. House
