The speakers all highlighted the importance of having trust with those you lead and being aware of how actions could make others feel. Leadership specialist Joel Bouzaid returned to the school to spend a day with Year 12 students to talk about ‘Leading with Integrity’. He focuses on values-based leadership and how values impact on the acts of leadership we display. We also held a range of leadership workshops and activities for Year 10 students which covered working collaboratively and the importance of teamwork as a leadership construct. COMMUNITY SERVICE Another opportunity to demonstrate teamwork and leadership is through community service. In 2023, plenty of community service hours were completed. Whether this was part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Immerse & Inspire programme, the Eco-Action group, the Service Committee, or the Year 10 Community Service Week at the

end of the year, many hours went into helping those less fortunate or supporting great causes. During the Year 10 Service Week, 146 students engaged in various community activities across four days. This included gardening, building compost bins, organising gear, constructing cots, spreading mulch, assembling food parcels, painting, and conservation efforts. The projects supported Burwood Hospital, Edible Canterbury, PIPS (Pregnancy Help), the Tuˉhaitara Coastal Park, Silverstream Reserve, Richmond Community Gardens, Diamond Harbour, 0800 Hungry, and Christchurch Community House. Through their efforts, students had the chance to showcase teamwork, leadership, humility, and compassion while making a positive impact on others. SONY CAMP It was great to see Sony Camp return in 2023 following the disruption of the Covid-19 years. The combined

St Maragret’s College and Christ’s College effort resulted in 12 campers, with a range of disabilities and needs, attending the three-day camp based at College. With about 100 volunteers across the weekend, there were loads of opportunities for students to be involved as companions, operations support, or as members of the media and memories team. The opportunity to provide a fun experience for the campers – many of whom were having their first nights away from home – and a weekend of respite for the families was important and enriching for those helping. For the companions, having to rely on their character strengths and leadership skills to take responsibility for all the needs of the campers was a challenge, but also rewarding. It was a wonderful win-win experience to round out the year. Matt Cortesi
