VIRTUES College Committee Reports

ACADEMIC It has been a busy year for the Academic Committee, running College’s inaugural STEM Week, reintroducing our in-school peer- tutoring programme, and carrying on last year’s new tradition of interhouse Esports. Our inaugural STEM Week was held in early Term 2, and marked a milestone in our calendar as the Academic Committee’s first-ever committee week. The week’s purpose was to spark curiosity and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects across year groups and Houses, encouraging boys to involve themselves in the various challenging but entertaining activities on offer. Throughout the week, students delved into a variety of events, from Beat the Chasers to bridge building, to an inter-school quiz night, and it

was fantastic to see so many boys so involved. The overall winner of the week was Corfe House. In 2023, the committee also placed a particular focus on its peer-tuition programme. We made sure to introduce it early in the year, and made its accessibility known to students. Through the reordered programme, tutees were able to find academic support from more experienced students, enabling their academic success in areas of personal struggle. The committee’s thanks go to the boys who consistently and diligently volunteered their time to help their peers. The final focus of the Academic Committee in 2023 was Esports. This was an event introduced last year that, due to its enormous success, we continued this year. We opted for Mario Kart as an enjoyable game for boys from each House to compete

in, and over nine rounds of intense competition, Corfe House again emerged the winner. All that the Academic Committee has achieved this year has been thanks to the hard work of the members, and the teachers whose support and expertise was invaluable in the events’ success. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the Academic Committee in 2023, and for the contribution of the students and teachers involved. I am very confident that under Seann Zhao’s leadership next year, the committee will continue to grow. Angus Gifford Head of Academic ARTS & CULTURE From humble hot chocolates to 100 boys battling it out for the final throne, 2023 has been a very successful year for the Arts & Culture Committee. The Arts & Culture Committee’s goal this year was to not only display the talent and skill that many of the boys possess here at College, but also to increase the enjoyment of every boy at the school, whether they are already involved in the Arts or not. Although not organised by the Arts & Culture Committee, both the House Music and House Plays festivals were great events in 2023. The level of planning, collaboration, and comradeship was something to be admired and I believe that all boys can, and should, be proud of their work in either one of these fantastic events. Of course, as with every year, the jewel in the crown of the Arts & Culture Committee is the annual edition of Arts Week. This year
