SPORT Members of the Sports Committee have been on their feet all year with an action-packed calendar of House sport and providing a helping hand with weekend sport. The new adaptation of House cricket to House BYC (backyard cricket) set the early competitive tone. Whether it was scoring, umpiring, or facilitating House volleyball, all committee members helped in some facet to put together great first events for the year. Alongside was the success of our cricket, tennis, athletics, water polo, volleyball, and aquatics teams. The committee was determined to increase College support at summer sport events, encouraging boys to get out there and back their friends. Rolling into the winter season, the calendar filled even further, with interhouse fixtures most lunchtimes, and all winter codes well supported throughout the week. On 26 May, the school readied for the annual Christchurch Boys’ High School rugby fixture. Several committee members contributed to the occasion through organising support or as a team player that day. Throughout the season, the consistent support of our 1st XV rugby team was great to see. At Assembly, the committee continued to encourage support of all winter sports and the boys responded in a positive way. This was particularly evident when it came to play-offs for the winter codes. The 1st XI football, 1st XI hockey, and senior basketball teams were all brilliantly

the International & Round Square Committee in 2023, and I have every confidence that Round Square and its IDEALS will continue to prosper under the leadership of Lucas Maguire. Luke Kim Head of International & Round Square SERVICE Service at Christ’s College this year has been very, very beneficial for the school environment and the community of Christchurch in more ways than one. The service ethos has been instilled in tradition for many years leading up to 2023. This year, this ethos has been successfully ingrained in many more students, which has led to the school having an even wider approach to giving back to the community. In 2023, the Service Committee specialised in giving back through charitable events and a scattering of practical activities. The flagship events of the year – the Sleep-Out for Homelessness and the Ice Blocks for Charity – cumulatively raised $4000 for the Christchurch City Mission and $2000 for the Red Cross, setting high bars for future years at College. Despite being very busy, Term 1 had a strong service focus. I am very proud of the work we have been able to achieve, both at College and for the community. The Sleep-Out for Homelessness was the most successful event of the year, with the money directly raised by those 25 students taking part. An average of $160 was raised per person, and one student raised $500. Students and teachers slept out on the Quad in the cool autumn temperatures with only a sleeping bag and no access to cellphones. It gave the students a diluted but eye-opening experience about what it meant to be homeless in Christchurch, including being woken by sirens in the middle of the night and by night security staff pointing torches. In Term 2, we helped on the streets with the Westpac Rescue Helicopters fundraising, as well as supporting

the Christchurch Aunties and the Love Grace x Handbag Appeal. Partnering with St Margaret’s College students, we packed handbags full of essential items, such as toothpaste and sanitary supplies, for women who had been victims of domestic violence. Events like these bind the school with the community, forging new and long-lasting relationships. In Term 3, we supported Daffodil Day, helping those affected by cancer. College raised $1500 for the cause, held on 25 August, and raised awareness about cancer and its impact on people’s lives. In Term 4, a handful of people visited Millie's Courthouse – Early Childhood Learning Centre and refilled the sandpits, with the help of several small volunteers. As you can imagine, the children loved the new sandpits, and everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed helping. You have probably picked up that service can mean many, many, different things – from charitable events to practical service. Giving service back to your community is easier than it sounds. So, was it a good year for service at Christ’s College? Absolutely. However, a lot still must be done, and the space of service is ever-changing. I’m excited for the future of the Service Committee – and all that it achieves – at College. Given how much we were able to do this year, I am extremely hopeful for the future.
