supported by the school. Although the 1st XI football side fell just short of its final, College’s support spurred both the basketball and hockey teams to qualify for their respective finals, where the support increased. At the conclusion of Term 2, the committee had worked together to run House futsal, table tennis, debating, and badminton. Following this busy term, Term 3 brought House basketball, chess, and golf. And, in our final term, the committee organised tug-of-war, touch rugby, and Ki o Rahi contests. Committee members have had their fair share of responsibility, whether organising House events, reading the activity report at Assembly, or as general ambassadors for sports support and inclusion. The running of the Sports Committee for 2023 has been a true collective effort. I would like to thank the committee members for their hard work and support. Lewis Whiteside Head of Sport WELLBEING The year got off to a strong start, with many boys wanting to be a part of our Wellbeing Committee – leading to the formation of a great team. The strength of this year’s Wellbeing Committee stemmed from its diverse members, each contributing their own values and perspectives. Throughout the year, the committee expanded in both size and influence, demonstrating that we could really make a positive difference within our school community. We also had the amazing support of Director of Wellbeing Education Caroline Black to help drive the committee and facilitate our many ideas. Our focus was on ‘Belonging’. Feedback from previous years showed this was an area we could develop in terms of school life. We also wanted to further embed the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ – Give, Take Notice, Be Active, Connect, and Keep Learning – into day-to-day school life. This was most prominent during our school Wellbeing Week.
The Wellbeing Week commenced on a Monday, emphasising ‘Connect’. The day began with a Wellbeing Chapel service, followed by the continuation of the ‘Have a Break with a Mate’ initiative, encouraging boys to connect with a new friend over a KitKat. On Tuesday, the spotlight was on ‘Keep Learning’, with an interhouse general knowledge quiz in the Chapman Room. The Wednesday activity embodied ‘Take Notice’, featuring the ‘Moments of Beauty’ Instagram endeavour. The Thursday activity revolved around ‘Be Active’, hosting a Wellbeing Assembly where various wellbeing ideas were showcased. The week culminated with ‘Give’, marked by a non-uniform day aimed at raising funds and awareness for Kahurangi. Kahurangi will be a modern, outpatient facility for Child and Youth Mental Health in Waitaha, driven by the Maˉia Health Foundation. In 2023, there was a Christchurch schools’ initiative working with Mike King’s, I Am Hope Foundation. We partnered with several local schools to organise a Christchurch Gumboot-a-thon, with a 10km walk in gumboots around Hagley Park to raise awareness of I am Hope. It was a successful event, with a good College turnout. Our annual Year 11 Wellbeing Day was hosted by event partner St Margaret’s College. Our combined Year 11 cohorts engaged in a range of
workshops and with speakers. With the theme ‘Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable’, the workshops were designed to improve the wellbeing of the students, both mentally and physically. The speakers were engaging and provoked student wellbeing conversations in a reflection time after each session. I am very grateful to have had the privilege of being Head of Wellbeing this year. It was a great experience working with every committee member. I would like to thank each student for being so involved with the committee’s ideas and values. I am also very pleased to hand the role over to Oscar Compton-Moen, who is very capable and will have a great impact on the committee and the school next year. I am excited for what he will bring as his ideas for next year are incredible. I also wish to thank Caroline Black, who has put so much energy into the committee this year and has provided us with a great environment in order to achieve our goals. She has had a significant impact on me and many boys and is perfect for her role. I know that Wellbeing will continue to grow and strive at College and I am excited to see how it will develop in
2024 and beyond. Finn Melhuish Head of Wellbeing
